My wife and I have been coming to Clacton on Sea for a number of years now, usually two or three times a year, but had never previously visited Armstrongs but now realise what we have been missing. Our reception was first class and the first question we were asked was if we wanted a bowl of water for our little dog Alfie. The surroundings are first class and well kept. Our food arrived piping hot with generous portions and extremely well presented and the service was excellent. Value for money is without doubt the best we have come across for quite some time. Well done all concerned and we will definitely be seeing you again.
I stopped by for a burger before heading home and ordered a chicken burger. Unfortunately, it was very tough and chewy, making it difficult to eat. When I brought this to the attention of the staff, they offered to replace it but I declined as my dining companions had already finished their meals. No refund was offered. My husband ordered a spicy bean burger, which he found to be bland and served oddly in a long roll with a round patty. He had to cut the burger in half to fit it back in the roll, then cut the roll in half to eat it. At £14 per burger, it was not worth the price. I do not plan on returning to this restaurant.
The only slightly disappointing aspects were that we had to pay a £10 per person deposit to reserve the table, including for children. However, this deposit was deducted from the total bill, and even though the meals for the children were only £5 each, they still had to pay the deposit. Additionally, we were celebrating a birthday and brought a cake with us, but were informed that there was a £2 per person surcharge if we wanted to eat the cake there. I understand that the restaurant may lose out if people don't order desserts, but this surcharge felt a bit excessive.
We booked a girls' bottomless brunch in advance. I have to admit I was a bit hesitant after reading some comments about the time rules. However, we were all pleasantly surprised with our experience. The service was excellent, we never had to ask for a drink or food as it was all taken care of. The selection of food and drinks was good. The only thing I missed was an espresso martini, but I had no trouble finding something else I liked. I would highly recommend this brunch spot, the cocktails are made fresh and the location is convenient. Thank you Armstrongs x.
