I have reviewed Asakusa in the past. I have been coming here for about 14 years. I 'm giving an update because the restaurant has new owners. Steve has sold the restaurant to a young couple. We eat at Asakusa usually 3 times per month. It...is a very convenient walk from home so we can take a decent bottle of wine and have a little sake as well. Not to sound too pompous but we are well traveled, experienced lovers of sashimi. Our standard order is sashimi, agadashi tofu and maybe tempura. The new owner/ chef is a young man from Shanghai. I expected more of it based on other reviews. but eating was disappointing overall. the aged ashi tofu was good and the horenso spinat was a small bland. the soft shell castors were quite average and the gyoza were excessively salty and contained...MSG! in view of the fact that we had called to check, there was no msg in any of the foods and was said there was none, this was extremely disappointing. msg is toxic to most people and should not be used, and especially if the restaurant has clearly stated that they do not use it at all. the only redeeming plate was the black cod that was very good, although a very small part for the price. the staff was friendly, but seemed to be confused on ord...
Since our last visit there has been a recent change of ownership resulting in an update of the decor. Food however presently remains the same although some additions are planned. Fortunately Steven the Sushi chef remains. Our favourite dish here is the black cod beautifully...prepared quite delicious. Lots of good choices we do love the soft shell crab. All up we spent $93 which included a BYO charge of $4. We believe Asakusa is the best value choice in the area we seem always to enjoy the food. Certainly recommended highly we will monitor the planned changes.
the two of us visited a rather quiet Friday night. the place is daggy, but pleasant, well worn. service was slow, 10 minutes to ask us about drinks and entrees. tempura prawn was ok, too marsh pork entree was better. auberginen entree in...miso-type sauce was pretty and squid ball yaki was interesting. we have been very happy and have not taken into account the small imperfections, but the overall experience, together with the full of decent Japanese in the city, will unfortunately not be a quick return. Absolutely loved the food from a menu that was quite extensive. The sushi was made fresh and was delicious. The salmon and chicken dishes were also first rate. The only disappointing thing about our visit was the very long wait between each dish. Very reasonable...prices and would go there again.
that is a beautiful restaurant. the staff is very efficient and eating is nice and comes out quickly. eating is cooked in Chinese style instead of in Japanese, as I assume that the personal is Chinese. there are subtle differences for the knower, such as the tofu is cooked with a sweeter sauce.
we eat here all 6 weeks or so and while eating is generally very good, the place is shut down and must be really cleaned and renovated to give it a new life. if they did, they would triple their business.
