Beautyful interior, friendly staff, poor cuisine for a star-rated restaurant. The culinary experience is announced as a surprise; you don’t get a view on the menu nor on number of courses, and that’s okay... While I liked to be served local produce, it should have...been seasoned to elevate taste, at least with salt and pepper. After a couple of dishes, which one of was a slice of (even not entire) mushroom with have to say delicious sauce, we got french fries as last course... As like: to avoid you leave hungry. I have been going to this hotel and restaurant for about 20 years or more. The rooms are good value and the restaurant authentic for the local cuisine. Mine host is very welcoming. It is 30 miles from Calais but in the heart of the flanders countryside. Driving from London, you can be there in four hours. The one thing it has though, and to me is unique for a location that is probably not 100 feet above sea level is that if you are up early enough and the sky is clear you can see the sunrise and later in the evening the sunset from the same place without going more than a few yards.Although I have travelled in 40 countries this is unique to me unless you climb a high hill or mountain or in a... We visited this Auberge in July 2012. Whilst the evening meal was good and the service attentive the bedroom and breakfast left a lot to be desired. Bed linen & blanket were stained, but there was worse to come. The breakfast consisted of a few small slices of stale bread warmed to freshen it up, some home made undescribable jam, a glass of orange and a cup of coffee with COLD milk, none of the usual fare now provided by French hotels. On reflection we should have refused to pay the charge of 16e for the breakfast and on our return home wrote to the owner with our views but did not receive any response.
The setting and restaurant are really nice with plenty of space between the tables to guarantee your privacy. The food combinations were very experimental, but failed to delivery any really interesting tastes. Fries with some cheese mayonnaise as main dish was a disgrace for star Michelin restaurant. We did not like any of the paired drinks. Some of the beers were almost undrinkable. In summary an experience to quickly forget.
A real incredible culinary expérience with one of the best and most famous cook from the North of France. If you drink Alcohol, try the formula included recommended and assorted drinks .... Authentic and delicious possibility to sleep on site but the waiting list...is quite long). Try to get enough time to have a walk in the countryside , it's beautiful !
This is not the easiest place to find but is well worth making an effort. The tasting lunch menu was amazing, a series of small dishes that were each a delicious surprise, artistically presented without being stupidly so and we left without feeling bloated. The restaurant looks trendy and has an eclectic interior style, slightly unexpected in this rural setting. The food was very nice, one could immediately tell they source their ingredients locally. Sometimes there was not enough protein with the veg for my taste, and I didn't like any of the paired drinks, but overall this was very interesting.
