The restaurant le Chapeau Rouge (red hat) is located directly on the main square (Platz de la république) in Saint Astier. It's lush inn and pretty charming. The tables sit inside and outside the restaurant in a small courtyard. The menu consists of a la carte and set menus. There is no English translation in traditional style. The ambience is relaxing and normally laid French style. It ensures that “holidaying in France” feeling. The waitress was functional if not efficient. We ordered from a la carte. This is a delightful restaurant with a warm ambiance serving traditional Perigourdian fare situated right in the centre of St Astier. It's run by the owners, Bernard Floriane Bonis, from whom I received a very warm welcome. I had the €13 lunch menu of the day: Soup, smoked salmon salad starter, roast chicken leg (fish alternative available) with vegetables for main and I finished with home made apple tart from the dessert choice. I'm allergic to mushrooms, they had no problem in preparing me the sauce without mushrooms which demonstrated their willingness to put the customer first and was indicative of the freshness of the food. The Auberge le Chapeau Rouge is an excellent restaurant with a very authentic and welcoming down home atmosphere. It serves the kind of food that is typical to this region of France, especially duck dishes confit de canard, magret de canard, foie de canard mi cuit (i.e. half cooked duck liver, but it sounds much better in French), are some of my favorites. The deserts are very good, especially the ones made out of chocolate. Everything is sourced locally. There were no SYSCO trucks pulling up to the door of Chapeau Rouge. Not many places for lunch on a Sunday in Saint-Astier, but fortunately Auberge du Chapeau Rouge was open and served a very good meal. The staff was welcoming, the interior of the restaurant pleasant and the food really good. Not often we are in this city, but we definitely know where to eat next time.
