The waiter was particularly helpful in trying to ensure that we understood our options despite our somewhat limited French and the food was well presented and tasty. The surroundings are unpretentious but relaxed and friendly - more of a bar with tables than a restaurant with starched table cloths.It would help if the restaurant were to print the menu options on paper rather than rely on the blackboards and explanations from the waiting staff as there are a number of "formules" available at lunchtime, at different prices and comprising different choices of the number of courses, choice of dishes, wit...
We were looking for a place to eat in Alencon on our way north to Calais and Trip Advisor came up with Bar a Papa. If you like shabby chic you will love this little restaurant. The façade looks a little faded but don't let that put you off - the host was very friendly and welcoming. We had le menu du jour - home made vegetable soup, cuisse de canard with gratin potatoes and coffee for €13. The food was very tasty. We came across this place by chance and went in because we were hungry and tired. It looked inviting, it had a comfortable and friendly vibe. We were the only people in there on a Tuesday evening but it still felt OK, the bar man was super friendly and we ordered burgers. They were really excellent and great value for money, everything a good burger should be! If I were to visit Alencon again, I would go there again, it was so good.
We had dinner here when stopping overnight in Alencon; the food was well prepared and tasted great! Although the building doesn't look much from the outside, don't be put off - it's comfortable and lively inside. The staff were very welcoming, and the lady chef/owner came out specially to speak to the English guests who had enjoyed an excellent meal. Definitely recommended.

Bar a Papa is a smart, stylish bar that somehow feels more pub than simple bar. It’s nicely done out in the traditional style, the music is good, and the service is friendly and very good.
Had a drink in Bar Papa and the atmosphere was really friendly and the food looked good. We will eat there next time we visit.
