Following a long walk in Tollymore Forest Park, we decided to drive into Newcastle for a coffee, along the seafront. Stopped at Base, as it was a beautiful day and we were able to sit outside and enjoy the lovely views. Went to order, but realised they took cash only (we only had card) to which the lovely lady (Kerry) replied “sure you can drop it in another time”. We explained that we were from Belfast and just visiting, but this was no problem. However, in the meantime, we did notice the sign free coffee for NHS workers and, in fact, we both work for the Belfast HSC Trust! Situated on Central Promenade, Newcastle, Co.Down the covered outdoor seating gives a truly Mediterrean atmosphere as you admire the views of the harbour and Slieve Donard, the highest peak in Northern Ireland, as it sweeps down to the sea. Choose one of the fabulous Base Coffee drinks or select from the range of herbal teas. For morning snacks try the sausage rolls, croisants or scone with fresh jam. Then later in the day you must try the home baked apple pie of one of the delicious (but huge) tray bakes. Base Coffee is not just a coffee shop, it's a hub for many regulars and undoubtedly you will very quickly feel welcome.
I want to thank Base for offering free coffee to NHS staff. I chose a hot chocolate for myself, but I was pleasantly surprised by the complimentary coffee given to my sister. It was a very generous gesture that was much appreciated. Base is a trendy hangout spot that always seems to be bustling with customers. The coffee is excellent, and the location along the promenade with views of the seafront and harbor shoreline is very relaxing. The staff members are friendly and attentive. Overall, it was a great experience. Thank you again.
Without a doubt the best coffee in Ulster. When I complained to Charlie this morning that he can’t keep giving me free coffee (I’m a carer) or he’d go bankrupt he replied with a wink “With all due respect, I can.” Absolute top bloke and seriously good brew 10/10 Popular with locals, convenient beautiful location, great service.

Stopped off for coffee and Traybakes with family and was able to bring dog as we sat outside under canvas. The Traybakes were huge and delicious without being too costly. Will definitely come back when up this direction again
Today we had the best ice cream at Base cafe. Authentic Italian thick and creamy. Truly delicious. We enjoyed it so much we stayed longer for a cappuccino and Americano. When in Newcastle Base is the place to go.

I find the coffee at Base is the best tasting in town, much better standard than the most popular over-rated cafe in town!
