I visited today, marking our first experience at the new location since they opened. Unfortunately, they served two customers who arrived after my family and me, which was quite frustrating, but we tried to remain patient. The gelato was very runny today, and the cone was stale, plus the portion size was disappointingly small. Perhaps the girl who served us noticed my annoyance and decided to give us less. Whatever the reason, it just felt like an off day for them. I usually love the gelato here, and I've never had any issues at the previous location, so maybe they're still adjusting to the new space.
If I could, I would give Benino a rating of 3.5 stars. We visited the shop while we were in Comox (we rented a place in Royston across the water) and were looking for something refreshing to eat. The shop is relatively small, but it offers a decent variety of gelato flavors. I decided to try a double cone with blood orange and pistachio (an unusual combination). The blood orange was just okay, but the pistachio was quite good (sticking to traditional flavors is usually a safe bet). On a sunny day, it's a nice spot to grab some gelato.
I have stopped here a few times while in the area. The servers are nice, the servings are a generous size when compared to most gelato shops, they let you have two flavours when ordering a single scoop, they have a nice range of safe and adventurous flavours, and most importantly, the gelato is creamy, smooth, rich, and flavourful! There is also comfortable seating inside and it is clean and neat. I would definitely recommend this place. Their gelato beats the competition in a certain chocolate shop in downtown Courtenay hands-down!
I am incredibly disappointed with the new owners. They really should have changed the name of this gelato shop when it was taken over. It’s frustrating to pretend that everything is the same as it used to be, without informing customers about the change in management. Now they’re preparing their own food and doing their own baking, but when the store was in its previous location, a Swiss baker was in charge, and her pastries were delectable. The food, coffee, and ice cream are all very tasty and this place has the potential to be a great spot, but they were extremely understaffed and made waiting for two crepes, a panini, and a cup of coffee inconvenient. We waited easily over 45 minutes for our simple order to be brought to us. We had to remind them we were waiting for food at least 3 times. I felt bad for the cashier and the barista because I knew they were understaffed, this comes down to management, not them
New shop. Bigger but not better. Charmless, noisy, inexperienced staff, no manager on site, long waits for coffee, dreadful baked goods. I've tried 3 and they all ended up in the bin. Child size cone is no longer available so who wants to take a couple of kids for too much to eat at a cost of $4.50 each. Savory dishes are good. Daily soups are delicious and good value but the whole experience is cold, disconnected and chaotic. I much preferred the old place.
Wow, we had the Pomegranate Gelato and are ruined for Ice Cream from now on. They had great selection, very nice decor and helpful staff, what more could you ask for.
