We dined at Bistrot L’Alchimiste on Rue Saint Denis located nearly in the shadow of the 15th century Cathedral (construction of the church began in 1434, on the site of a Romanesque cathedral, and took 457 years to finish! It’s worth a visit while you’re in Nantes) This charming and small restaurant is located on a small side street and could be easily overlooked. It had a great rating on Trip Advisor and looked charming when I checked it out on the walk to my hotel from the Musee d’Arts de Nantes where our art museum association meetings are being held. What more can one ask for than wonderful food, attentive service, and an inventive menu. Everyone in our party started with a local Nantes...
We booked via internet. Different menus proposed together with wines chosen/suggested by owner. Out of the three starters, pouched egg was outstanding, in an interesting combination. Then we all had fish with an extraordinary fine bar cooked delicately and “au point” The cheeses plateaus were a good end. We trusted the owner who recommended very interesting wines, both red and wine by the glass , all very positive surprises and some of less well known regions in France. Would go back when I’m back in Nantes
The café-restaurant inside the Musée des Beaux Arts was not tempting so we went in search of somewhere else nearby before returning to see more of the Musée. By happy chance we fell on Bistrot l’Alchimiste and had a delicious lunch. We were welcomed, even a little after 14:00 when many restaurants in Nantes stop serving lunch, and were made to feel comfortable in every way. Good wine at a reasonable price too.
A must for us every year when we visit Nantes. We are never disappointed. Delicate, original, seasonal and km0. All dishes have a “reason to exist” and a personality. Sure the Michelin star is not far. Great wines too
