At one time I'd have rated Bonzai as the best Japanese restaurant in the area. Service was never particularly swift but the food was consistently brilliant and the place had a great atmosphere. Fast forward to the present and the food is still good, even outstanding at times. Sadly the restaurant itself is beginning to look very tatty. Shabby decor, ripped seat covers and general feeling that is not been well maintained. The toilets, in particular are pretty grim. One bowl overflowing in the ladies and no paper on the dispenser. This has become one of my favourite spots for food in Nottingham! Prior to going here, I would have said that I don’t like sushi, having only tried sushi from buffets and the supermarket, but I loved the sushi here. The sushi is fresh and the portion sizes are generous. They also have a range of other dishes. In addition to the sushi, we also tried the noodles; you can choose the type of noodle, the meat and the sauce to go with it. The atmosphere is calm and laid back. When visiting outside of peak hours, we haven’t needed to book.
I've been coming to Bonzai since 2008, that's actually 15 years now! Sometimes the service could be better, but the food never misses the mark. The Korean Spicy Udon with Beef would be my last meal on earth if I got to choose. When I lived in Asia I would always come home to it and make a beeline for Bonzai. Maybe you can give me the recipe? ; Really good lunch menus too. Earlier this April I had the Udon shiyo noodles and they were amazing. Huge portion of tempura Inc king prawn. Sushi wonderful as always!
Absolutely amazing evening, had a mix of a vegetarian avacado dish along with an udon noodles dish, both absolutely delicious, cannot fault the food at all, but the service was the show stopper tonight. Two lovely members of staff on tonight, both fast, friendly and efficient. Only caught the name of the younger man, Dan who was exceptionally amazing. Will definitely be back soon!

Really enjoyed the food and service, I went for a set menu whcih was very good value for money (but so much food I couldn’t finish it! I definitely want to go again to try the bento box, the ramen and the California rolls which all looked amazing so a few more visits are definitely in order.
One word, ”Fantastic”. Went in Monday lunchtime and it was full, staff having to turn people away the fact it was full at that time of the week says a lot in itself! We had a great sushi platter much better than the chain restaurants in town. Highly recommend, we will be back
Main came out before starter. Katsu chicken was dry and tasteless, fried squid was like rubber and had to be sent back. Chicken skewer starter was undercooked and mushy in texture. Place felt grubby and seat cover was very ripped. Service was fast and inattentive.
Absolutely fantastic place, the best Japanese food I have had ever! The service from Dan I believe) was nothing short of brilliant. Thank you and I will be returning.

I live nearby and always wanted to try the food here and it didn't disappoint. Top quality food I will definitely eat here again! Highly recommended!
