Great new restaurant on Ste. Catherine near Greene. The first and most famous is on Chabanel. This is a well decorated , clean and bright place with a busy staff and clientele. My first order for iced tea was forgotten and needed a second server to correct.Our group of four tried the Mac , cheese and tomato sauce , pasta al for no and spaghetti in Olive oil. But surprisingly service was very slow , inspite of staff rushing around to a half filled Resto. My MAC in red sauce was delicious as was the al forno dish but the spaghetti needed much more dressing as it was very dry... The plain salad was small and just so so but $7?. Not worth it.This is a fine restaurant but service needs to be spee...
Arrived at 11:45 a.m. to avoid the rush. Food arrived immediately and was excellent. Service was courteous and friendly. Then it went south from there. Had to flag down the bus boy to order our coffees and biscotti which n ver arrived. 20 minutes later tried to flag someone down to get our bill. 20 Minutes later my frustrated hubby got up to pay and had to wait at the cash for about 10 minutes to pay. To add insult to injury, during our meal we were asked to move over to accommodate a group of 7. You'd think they'd offer us a free coffee or cookie for the interruption? Nada. As we were leaving I mentioned to the owner that we weren't pleased and he said he'd try to do something when we came...
I had been hearing terrific things about Café Gentile, and finally had the opportunity to visit this past Saturday. Absolutely best lunch I've had all year. Authentic Italian the way it should be. Sure, it's expensive, but I've never before experienced this quality of grilled Italian sandwiches, pasta and coffee anywhere else outside of Italy. The veal scaloppini sandwich and the side of fusilli pasta with rose sauce were incredible. My friend loved his chicken schnitzel. I always take a little bit of sugar in my coffee, but there was not need with their extremely flavourful cappuccino. The friendly and knowledgeable service is an added bonus
We were visiting Montréal and needed sandwiches for take-out. We ended up getting sandwiches from this place three days in a row, and then on the fourth day we got sandwiches to eat on our drive back to Toronto. The sandwiches were prepared within 10-15 minutes. We had a variety, and they were all delicious. I have a shellfish allergy; after just one take-out order, the man answering the phone remembered who I was each time I called. Judging from the fact that the café was packed each time we came by, we believe that in-house dining must be just as good. Next time were in Montréal, we will either go or order from there again! I frequent this restaurant and very excited to share my experience with friends. The food was delicious as usual. However, I felt uncomfortable with my friend being charged $0.25 for milk for coffee. She ordered a regular coffee which was on the menu but the server said they only have expresso, americano or cappuccino. The server was excellent and r explained why this was so and offered to bring my friend a little milk for her americano. When the $50.00 bill arrived and we saw the charge of $0.25 for the milk, we were surprised and said how déclassé and "cheap" !
We went to Gentile expecting a nice and inexpensive dinner. Unfortunately we ended paying over $200 for 3 people. Much more than we were expecting.The food is average at best. The Caesar salad was average with no bacon, minimal cheese and no offer of anchovies. My pasta plate would have satisfied a fashion model- small portion with only pasta and cheese. No life to it and it was not even al dente!! The tiramisu was average as it had too much coffee and not enough sugar.The service was good but did not make up for the food quality. Too bad.
I have been to Gentile many times, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I've even ordered take-out from it. I have to say that it has some of the best Italian food I've had in Montreal. From practically perfect gnocchi to spot-on cannoli, Gentile never disappointed. The staff there also is incredibly nice and welcoming. All in all, Gentile has maintained a "homie" feeling while serving professional grade food; quite the feat.
I have been twice to this new place. I liked...Spotlessly clean, genuinely nice staff, great espresso, large list of choices on the menu, good clean simple food, comfortable seating in nice decor.I think that these things need attention...Loud booming and annoying "music", servers who do not listen and make mistakes as a consequence, very limited patisserie choices.That said, please go, it is a good spot, nice folk. Very pricey, but you have to remember that you're in Westmount. Nice friendly service. Small and somewhat noisy. Good selection for vegetarians, they even have a daily veggie special. It's very new to the area. There's quite a few restaurants around here now, so here's hoping for some healthy competition.
