Whilst staying in Totnes we decided to go for an Indian and came across Cafe Mumbai whilst out walking during the day. Being right at the top of the high street we would of missed it! We phoned and booked a table for 7:30pm and on arrival, only one other table was occupied. The restaurant had its air con on which was great because it was hot outside. We were instantly welcomed and put at ease and given menu's. So much choice and really easy to read which was great. I choose the mint chicken and my husband went for one of the specials. He asked one of the waiters for his recommendations and advise and he seemed very knowledgeable. We both really enjoyed our choices, and it was great the waite...
I visit the South Devon region regularly and have eaten at other Indian restaurants in Totnes. On a recent visit, I decided to try Cafe Mumbai. It was a very good decision. Do not be put off by the restaurants somewhat dated interior, The food is excellent, learning much more to authentic Indian than Bangladeshi interpretation. All the dishes were full of fresh vibrant flovours and well balanced. Service was very good. Another sign of a good restaurant is hearing the reactions from other diners. Many were regulars, as were those popping in for take-aways. I will be back soon to try more dishes in their extensive repertoire.
Vegans have a variety of clearly marked choices at this charming restaurant. Highlights include the creamy chana dal and the nicely fried aubergine with a turmeric hue and unique flat bean seeds. The richness of the dishes makes them perfect for sharing as a side between two people. While chapatis are not always vegan, they may be depending on the chef's choice of butter. Having eaten here regularly since moving to the area last December, we were both very disappointed with our meals (chicken zalfrezi and chicken malay). The chicken was not fresh, it was tough and tasted stale. The sauces were bland, whereas their sauces used to be wonderful with great use of spices. We asked if the chef has changed and were told 'no ', asked if there was a problem. We told them what we thought. No reparations offered. We won 't visit again I 'm afraid. My son has a nut allergy. The staff were very reassuring over the phone and remembered without prompting when we arrived. They were calm, confident about their ingredients and reassuring. This is possibly the best allergy experience we have had at a resturant. The food was excellent and the service excellent.
My wife and I visited this restaurant on July 19th while on vacation in Totnes. The food was delicious and they were able to accommodate gluten, dairy, and egg free diets. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the food was always fresh and tasty. Thank you!
Take away treat with friend .we were so pleased to find this place was open when all other take aways closed after bank holiday .Had intended to have Chinese but very pleased with the food ,and service we got here.Will definitely be eating here soon
This is by far the best Indian/Bangladeshi restaurant take away in South Devon. We went for the first time in a year. Which is far too long. And the food and service was quite magnificent. Thank you Kobir and Shamee, you are the best. Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch
I really enjoy the fact that this restaurant always offers fish dishes on their menu. The food is very delicious. Both of my sisters, one vegetarian and the other who ordered chicken, also enjoyed their meals.
