I decided to stop here during the return leg of my Christmas bike ride from Brough to Driffield. As a cyclist I love nothing more than a nice coffee and a light bite to help me refuel on a 62 mile ride, (in winter no less) so I was more than happy to see that this cafe has bike storage and a friendly atmosphere to make you feel at home whilst kitted up. The range of food is what you would expect from a cafe, but the portions are nicely sized and the coffee is decent. The staff are also friendly and even gave me some napkins and water to help me wipe the dirt off my bike. We went to give cafe Velo a try as we were wanting a decent cafe to sit and chill while having lunch, plus have a nice friendly atmosphere feel. It was the right choice, as we were made to feel very welcome and felt relaxed, Cafe Velo is under new management also, so good to see setting a high standard straight away. We were welcomed when we arrived and given time to look at the menu to decide on what we wanted, which was great as I do not like to be pestered when looking at the menu. Having read fantastic reviews, I was hoping to treat my guests to a good experience. Oh dear. We walked through the door at 1pm on Sunday, thinking it would be buzzing. The place was empty, apart from a solitary man sitting in the window. It was dark, unwelcoming, and smelt of stale fat. The two young girls behind the counter gave no welcome, in fact looked extremely uncomfortable and didn't really know what to do with us. We made a polite attempt at looking at the menu, and beat a hasty retreat. We had a fantastic meal in a Saturday Market Deli, which was absolutely on top of the game.
Sorry Cafe Velo. I say sorry because we are regular customers. The last visit on a Saturday morning just before lunch we thought the Cafe Gloomy and quiet. The full English was ok but not exceptional. The service was ok but normally there's a nice vibe even if your not a cyclist. On a previous visit we commented on the table being sticky. Organise regular weekly rides for a group of enthusiastic cyclists and always book our stops in advance. Imagine my embarrassment when took group of 12 there yesterday only to find it all locked up and dark. Eventually told there was a family emergency and that they had tried to call but no call was registered on my phone. Really poor and does not deserve to be supported with this kind of attitude to customers. Shame.
The lighting in the cafe was a bit dim, possibly because it is situated deep within the building. The teacake was tasty, but lacked enough butter, especially around the edges. It's recommended to ask for extra butter when ordering. A napkin would have been a nice addition. The decaf Taylor tea was very weak, so requesting an additional tea bag is advised to enhance the flavor.
The restaurant offers a diverse menu, including options for vegetarians and an all-day breakfast. The prices are reasonable and the meal was delicious. There is something for everyone, including simple options like toast and beans on toast that are perfect for kids.

Visited on Wednesday and was very impressed. A great setting and very cyclist friendly. A good menu, friendly and helpful staff, dog friendly, and amazing bacon and sausage sandwiches. Would highly recommend.
