We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Canterbury and plan to return soon. We started with coconut shrimp as an appetizer; it was good, but we both felt it wasn’t a standout dish. For our main courses, he had the duck and I opted for the venison special of the evening. The duck was absolutely fantastic, with a generous portion of half a whole duck that was worth the price. The flavor was incredible! My venison was also very tasty. Our side dishes were a delight as well, including freshly cooked vegetables, red cabbage, fresh fruit, potatoes, and spaetzle. Really enjoyed a special dinner here outside in their back courtyard. They have heat lamps but it was unseasonably warm for the end of September and they weren't needed. They were meticulous about cleaning between diners and staff wearing masks. The food quality was high and there was a high degree of attention. Prices were reasonable for what I believe is the nicest restaurant in town. We got the fixed price meal and a nice bottle of NY wine. The swiss menu was comforting if not a little bit hardy ???????? They have a parking lot behind the restaurant.

The food was good, but considering the prices—$28.50 for lamb and $25.50 for chicken cordon bleu—I expected a bit more in terms of vegetables. The slices of bread were very thin; it would have been nice to have a few more slices of tomato and some chunks of cucumber in the house salad. The spaetzle was bland and didn't seem like a fitting side for the chicken. My husband also mentioned that the breading on the chicken cordon bleu was a bit thick.
We started with a mushroom risotto appetizer, which we all enjoyed, and then moved on to the Wienerschnitzel and Fruits de Mer. Everything was delicious! The Wienerschnitzel was light and tender, and the Spätzle was perfectly cooked. The service was excellent—attentive without being intrusive.
I went for a Food Wine paired dinner with the Mid Hudson Food Wine Society. The restaurant put together a great menu for the evening. Very cozy inside. I'd like to go back in the summer when you can sit on the outside deck next to the babbling brook.
