I’ve just realised I’ve been visiting The Beck for over 20 years now for both drinks and meals with friends and family and I’ve never written a review! The Beck for me is home from home and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve visited. They say a business is only as good as it’s staff, and maybe this is why The Beck has lasted so long with a reputation for a relaxed atmosphere good food and good service. The staff here are friendly, caring and professional, I’ve never been anywhere where I felt so at home as The Beck. Edward, Julie, Theresa, Kieran and not forgetting Trish in the kitchen make the place what it is! In 20 years I’ve never had a bad meal here, the food is excellent, and today...
Seems hit or miss, had Sunday lunch before Christmas and it was very nice, this time not so. First the bread didn't taste fresh like the previous visit, told the waitress my wife would like the red cabbage omitted but turned out it was omitted for all of us. Charging an extra pound for a Yorkshire to those whom do not have beef is stringy. Paid three pounds extra for pork and beef and all they did this time was replaced one slice of beef with pork. Beef and pork was tasty though small portions this time, roast potatoes OK, veg was very hard, the kale felt like chewing grass, lamb was fatty and tough. Yes I could have complained after the meal but I don't go out to make a scene.
We came for Sunday lunch. Between us we had the lamb, the pork, and the beef. All of the meats were delicious. The vegetables were very tasty (but not traditional/seasonal veg). It could have been improved with more seasonal veg. I’m not a fan of sugar snap peas in my Sunday roast. The veg was undercooked for our liking, but it had flavour. The pub lacked atmosphere. Perhaps the fire could have been lit? The service was excellent and very friendly. The beers were well kept and there was a good choice. It isn’t a carvery anymore (shame about that). A good pub, but with some room for improvement.
The breakfasts at The Beck used to be lovely but have become very disappointing.I recently had Eggs Florentine for brunch and found it totally inedible because it was swimming in what is best described as a thin butter sauce. Mentioned this to the waitress when paying and her only comment, though polite, was that if I visited again I could ask for the sauce on the side. My companions had bacon that had been burned to a crisp. I see they are looking for new kitchen staff so hopefully the food will improve. But I won’t visit for brunch again. Well, we wanted to go. We sent an email request and, having had no response, we rang and left a voicemail asking for confirmation. As we didn’t hear a peep we went elsewhere The Kings Head at Tealby actually (which was lovely). As a previous reviewer has said, The Beck used to be lovely. Don’t know what’s happened but this total lack of customer service means we definitely won’t be going again. Disappointing and, some would say, downright rude.
Lovely meal and welcome for lunch, just my son and i popping in. Not sure what could be improved! The bouillabaisse was one of the best I have had and my son loved his sausages and mash. Busy for a weekday lunch in Jan which made for a lovely atmosphere. A great chef and team, thank you
Cosy little place, good service, friendly staff. Good food. The menu isn’t massive but it doesn’t need to be, sometimes there’s too much choice at some establishments
Not sure what’s going on with this place, been shut for nearly a year, no communication from the owners or updates about an opening date. Very sad. Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch
