This restaurant has everything. The host, Julien is exceptionally friendly and hospitable. He was very helpful when we booked the restaurant ( he speaks English and other languages although he is Croatian), and offered several alternatives for vegetarian options which was really helpful. The setting of the restaurant is wonderful, in the gardens next to the abbey in Paunat. Lovely large garden and beautiful setting. The food was excellent including the vegetarian options, and delightfully served by our friendly host. Julien obviously gets a lot of repeat business as he was greeted by name by many visitors. Very busy but service was very good and timely.
We popped in here at lunchtime and managed, amazingly, to eat without a reservation. Within 20 minutes, it was full.Possibly the most beautiful setting for a restaurant that I've ever visited. It has to be seen to be believed.The food is brilliant as is the service. My wife is a veggie and loved her lunch too!Given the love and attention, it is not expensive!Advice?Book in advance.Try to choose a sunny day and eat outside.If you're eating at lunchtime, don't plan anything after lunch...We loved it so much that we are going back for dinner on Saturday night.
This restaurant reflects the best in local ingredients, well presented and cooked. Simple dishes, but delicious flavours. And the welcome and service are excellent.We came here for my husband's birthday dinner, on a chilly evening in March. The dining room in this beautiful ancient building by the Abbey was warm and welcoming. I was also very impressed with the staff's immediate understanding of coeliac dietary requirements; the gluten free rolls provided were delicious and there was no problem with the menu choices. A very pleasant evening meal!
Lovely Sunday lunch for two.Food was excellent, staff are friendly, attentive and happy to explain menus for non French speaking visitors.The setting is wonderful and we had an an entirely enjoyable two hour lunch.Costs are very reasonable for the location and quality of the menu.Book in advance as usually busy, especially Sunday lunch which is a bit if a tradition in France. A terrine of fois gras, guinea fowl stuffed with leek and mushroom served with cauliflower purée, carrots and sautéed potatoes, caramel bavarois, wine and coffee, cooked to perfection, beautifully served and in a really picturesque setting. The price for two people? Under 60 euros
Exceptional service; exceptional food; yet unpretentious; Julian speaks excellent English, as do his staff; exceptional setting. Never disappoints (I first visited with my folks in 2016 and vowed to bring my wife here). Amazing and thank you Julian. I will be back
Good food, nice people and an amazing location - what's not to like? This is or one "must-eat" location every time we go to the Dordogne. There are other good restaurants to dine at and that are worth trying but we love this place.

We ate here to celebrate a friends birthday. The setting for Chez Julien is perfect. Set close to the church in Paunat with well kept gardens. The food is exceptional and the staff are attentive and helpful.
