Listen, we've been going to this Duke's location every other month or so for over two years. We used to LOVE it. The burgers were amazing, the sweet potato fries with the aioli were amazing, the crème brûlée was amazing, the elote loco was amazing. Over the past few months, every time we go back something is worse about the quality/ value.First, the crème brûlée was unavailable for weeks and when it came back it wasn't nearly as good. Then, the elote loco tasted like nothing. A couple weeks later, the proper burger wasn't cooked well as it always is, and the cheese on my friends proper burger wasn't melted at all. The last time we visited, about two weeks ago, every single one of these thing...
I have never had such uninspired food until I came here. It was empty on a Saturday morning and I ordered a bacon and egg sandwich. The bread was maybe waved over a toaster and I can’t imagine the egg was cooked longer than the time it took to crack it. I understand the value of a runny egg, but a raw egg on untoasted white bread is disgusting. I pointed out that the restaurant was empty to suggest that the meal was prepared like this on purpose, and not due to time constraints. I suggest the staff do some soul searching and try to determine what the final product should look and taste like before before preparing the meal, because it seems like the mission has gotten lost over time.
Duke’s Grocery is a quintessential DC networking spot serving traditional American food that will never disappoint. I have gone here quite regularly, and I’m always met with the same level of decent hospitality. Although the place will not “wow” you, it will do its job for the fairly priced menu and great locations. Whether meeting friends or mentors, this place is versatile and appeases any tastes. They have indoor and outdoor dining options, including high and low tops and bar seats. I believe it’s a better, more low key environment than it’s neighboring competitor, Founding Farmers. Come here to avoid the lunch lines elsewhere and enjoy great brews and burgers!
The atmosphere on the inside is lively, you will have a blast with a group or the bartender. If you prefer a more quiet setting they will seat you outside in front or outside in the back, the inclosed market are which has a nice vibe. I am a repeated customer who would urge anyone I know to give the Proper Burger a try. They are so good my fiancé and I ordered a third one to share. There are multiple options for vegetarians. I highly recommend the Wagyu Beef Burger along with the shareable fries as a side. I made sure to specify that I wanted the meat cooked well done. This restaurant is conveniently within walking distance from the Metro stops. They offer Happy Hour from Monday to Friday, between 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that when my friend and I paid, the server informed us they could only split the bill in half, rather than by individual items.
There was a 2 hour wait at the place down the street so we stopped in here and were delighted. We were seated immediately, the host was incredibly nice and our food was out not 10 minutes after walking in. Great atmosphere, with a fun pub-like vib, delicious food and super clean bathrooms. Absolutely will be coming here again!
I've had wonderful experiences at Duke's in the past, but tonight my server, Carlos, truly exceeded my expectations in making sure I was well taken care of. The food is delicious and fairly priced; I particularly enjoy their burgers and turkey burgers, while my boyfriend loves the English breakfast during brunch.
The food and service were both average. Overall, many restaurants in the city seem to leave tables empty while seating walk-in customers at the bar. The wagyu burger is unreal. Some will recommend Duke’s burger, while good, don’t listen to that. If you’re a burger person, stop reading this and go order the wagyu burger!
