A cozy, fantastic place to eat.. I recently ate at El Familiar on a cold Jersey afternoon, looking for something warm. I pulled up the Urbanspoon reference on my Iphone, and El Familiar popped up on a random search. El Familiar is a medium sized eatery, with tasteful decor that sets a casual mood. They start you off with chips and two bowls (two! of salsa, a chunky, spicy mix and one smooth and mild mix. Both are very good, and the chips are nicely salty, without being too greasy. The food itself is wonderful and served with spanish-style rice, pinto refried beans with a topping of cheese, a lettuce-tomato-guacamole mix, and the main entree itself. really good food. I've eaten a few times here. el familiar is a special place: the prices are reasonable, the service is excellent, and the eating is slam-dunk awesome. I especially recommend some of the combination plates. they really get a rehearsal about what this kind of kitchen is about. I don't know what to say about the critique that eating is coming too fast. faster service is a plus for me when eating is so good. in any case worth a try.
Best Bet. My family has been eating here since it 's opening. Great Columbian, Mexican South American cuisine. The fajitas (especially shrimp) are served really hot and are seasoned to perfection. The Seafood w/rice is supurb. The staff is friendly and eager to please. It 's clean and pleasant. Our friends from the City say it compares very well to the best Spanish foods they 've tasted. I am a fan.

I've been eating at el familiar for about four years now. Hasn't changed one bit. Prices are fair and you literally get a plate full of food every time. If you want good authentic food. El Familair is the place.
Awesome. Great food but comes out lightening fast. Great place to take a date in case it sucks. You will be full and satisfied and back home in 30 minutes without your bad date.
I enjoy eating here. they are one of the only ones they can get a tamale and they are authentic and delicious. it is nice to bring a beautiful glass of wine
