We picked this restaurant after a baseball game at the East LA College after seeing the 4 stars on Yelp. We should have read the recent reviews. First of all it wasn 't busy at lunch and then I noticed a B rating on the window before we walked in, but still decided to give it a try. There was one waitress who was very nice, but it took a very long time to order and an even longer, I mean longer, as in 50 minutes to get our food! My husband asked 2 times and was told it 's almost done. The waitress never came over to let us know the status, so he had to go up to the counter and ask. I don't usually write reviews on Yelp, but my family and I had a negative dining experience recently. We hadn't been back to this restaurant since Felipe and the rest of the staff left. Felipe was an excellent chef and his skills on the grill were amazing. However, this time my son-in-law ordered a filet mignon plate that lacked flavor and had a heavy cheese topping. It arrived much later than the rest of our dishes because the meat had been burned the first time. The rice was overcooked and my shrimp ceviche was bland. Ever since Felipe, the chef, left, as well as the sisters who were the waitresses, service has gone down. Nobody ordered extra tortillas since we had tacos but we were charged $5. We came to realize that the charge was for 2 tostadas that we asked for to accompany an order of ceviche. They don't include tostadas in ceviche, or for that matter crackers, like the civilized world does, so we had to pay extra for those 2 tostadas. What?!? The food was bland or salty, no inbetween. I typically do not give restaurants a 1-star rating, but I would advise against visiting El Gallo Grill. Ever since Felipe and the previous staff departed, the quality of the food and overall experience has significantly declined. We used to be regular customers before the pandemic, enjoying the unique wood fire flavor of the carne asada that set this place apart from others. Felipe, the previous chef, was truly talented at his craft, and it is a shame he is no longer there. The new staff members just don't measure up. Additionally, the owner seemed displeased when I inquired about Felipe, which speaks volumes about the current state of the restaurant. Do not be swayed by the owner's respons... This restaurant is fantastic! It's clean, serves generous portions, has a great ambiance, and offers delicious grilled food with fresh sides, along with toasted bolillo rolls for their tortas. We met up with old friends for lunch and my husband was familiar with El Gallo Grill from his childhood in the neighborhood. It was wonderful to see that it is still a beloved spot in the community. Jesus, our server, did an outstanding job as the jack-of-all-trades. He deserves a raise!
First time coming here after winning the right to choose the place. NO WIN HERE! Waited over 30 mins to place our order the waitress even said she forgot about us!!! Carne asada tacos and pepito were chewy and tough!! Horrible hospitality and horrible food. Definitely going on my list of 'see you never '!
Lo MEJOR! This is a wonderful family friendly restaurant. Everything on the menu is delicious Great Steaks, chicken, and salmon cooked on grill. Love the agua frescas. Cucumber water is so good! We will keep going to this fantastic restaurant! Love the food!
