HUGE disappointment today! My family and I have eaten here many times in the past and after today I highly doubt we will return! Arrived at 1230 and did not get the first persons food (out of six of us including a child) until 135. The rest of the table including the 6 year olds cheese sandwich did not appear for another 10 minutes and only after asking where it was! Many people who had arrived after us were being served before us even people who had the same or similar meals. Our drinks that we had prefer with the meals were long since drank or gone cold! I visited Gemmells on Wednesday, October 21st with my husband, daughter, and son-in-law. Upon arrival, we waited at the entrance of the coffee shop to be seated. Unfortunately, no staff members acknowledged us despite seeing us waiting. Eventually, someone showed up to seat us at a dirty table, which we had to wait for to be cleaned. We waited for our order to be taken, only to watch customers who arrived after us have their orders taken first. I went to this restaurant for a late lunch and it was very crowded with no social distancing measures in place. All tables were occupied and there was no check-in procedure, unlike other local cafés. They provided paper and pencils for contact tracing, which seemed counterproductive as we had to touch them. There was no option for contactless ordering, and everything had to be ordered at the table. There was no one-way system in place, and customers were freely approaching the counter and interacting with staff. Rotten service spoilt the tasty macaroni cheese. Ordered Mac Cheese which came with garlic bread. Garlic burns my throat so I asked at the till for it to be replaced with ordinary bread no problem said the cashier. Meal arrived with the garlic bread on the plate. We stopped by this restaurant to grab some breakfast to go, it was only our second time visiting. The food was decent but not worth the cost. I ordered a roll with a soft fried egg but received a very hard fried egg instead, and the pancakes were nothing special, definitely not worth £5 each. It was not as good as our first visit and we are not likely to come back again.
This is my second time visiting this restaurant and the food was good, as were the cakes. However, I have one criticism: Please do not touch the cakes with your hands when serving them! Use tongs, forks, or wear gloves for hygiene purposes.
Popped in for a tea/coffee but went for soup( chicken broth) £4 but my god it was a meal in itself and with a proper bread roll. The cheese scone was also good. Great friendly service and prices reasonable for these type of establishments.
