The restaurant was crowded, but surprisingly, no one seemed happy or engaged in conversation. We weren't greeted by the waitress, an older woman wearing glasses, despite arriving around 8:00 AM. After waiting over 15 minutes to place our order, we noticed that another group who arrived after us was being served first. When we finally flagged down the older waitress to let her know we were ready to order, she responded sarcastically, asking "Ready for what?" It took over an hour from when we ordered to when our food finally arrived. On a positive note, the portion sizes were generous for the price. Fifteen years ago, this place was fantastic, but unfortunately, things have changed in Rockaway. The food was decent—it's hard to mess up scrambled eggs and waffles. However, the service was lacking; I received only one cup of lukewarm coffee and never got a refill. I understand if the restaurant was busy, but there were only three other occupied tables besides mine. On the positive side, the prices are quite reasonable. If you're just looking for a quick meal before hitting the beach and don’t mind a no-frills experience, this place isn’t a bad option.
As someone who isn't entirely at ease with dining indoors yet, I still want to support my favorite small businesses. Grumpy's is a wonderful breakfast spot right in the heart of Rockaway Beach. We chose to take our food to go so we could savor it while enjoying a beach view from our hotel. We ordered the chicken fried steak and a bacon omelette, which made for a nice little sampler for my wife and me. Everything was delicious, particularly the massive cinnamon roll that complemented our morning coffee perfectly. I highly recommend trying Grumpy's!
THIS PLACE WILL TURN YOUR FROWN UPSIDE DOWN! Wow, everything about this restaurant is amazing. The food is exceptionally well-prepared and very reasonably priced for the generous portions! Make sure to arrive hungry! I ordered the #1 (the picture with the hand for comparison), and my wife had the #2. They also offer gluten-free options and have wheelchair access! My wife really liked the breakfast menu offerings and the portion sizes at this restaurant. While I tend to favor larger portions, I found the prices to be fair. She ordered the one egg with a sausage patty and pancakes, and she enjoyed it. I tried the sausage breakfast burrito, which was tasty, but I could have easily eaten two. The service was outstanding, and the staff really takes care of their customers.
I arrived at the restaurant an hour before lunch. It was a bit busy, and it took some time for our food to be served. However, the wait was definitely worth it for the freshly cooked hash browns and bacon.
The staff was incredibly friendly, the eggs were cooked to perfection, the homemade gravy was tasty, and the sausage was top-notch. Overall, it was a wonderful experience.
