I stopped visiting the Detroit location because I received burnt-tasting chicken there twice. However, I decided to try the Royal Oak, MI location and I was pleasantly surprised! The chicken was served hot, golden brown, crispy, juicy, and absolutely delicious. The baked beans were thick and flavorful, unlike the runny ones I had in Detroit. This was my first time having the mac and cheese, and it was impressive as well. The customer service is consistently good at both locations! The chicken was juicy and tender, lightly battered, with just the right amount of heat that even I, with my sensitive palate, enjoyed. I was pleasantly surprised by how juicy the tender chicken was, and my partner's full chicken was just as delightful. The fried pickles and green tomatoes had a deliciously crunchy cornmeal breading. The staff was friendly and quick, with Thomas going above and beyond to make our first visit memorable. He was such a lovely person. The restaurant was clean, with all employees wearing masks, and the tables were well-spaced for social distancing, making me feel very safe while dining. And let's not forget the pie— the chess pie was absolutely to die for!
We have been dining at this restaurant on and off for nearly two years, and it has consistently impressed us! The only time I’ve left with a stomach ache was from eating too quickly, as the food is so delicious that you want to savor every last bite. The chicken dishes have a nice kick to them, and despite not being a big fan of spicy food, I find them so incredible that it's definitely worth it. The food was quite tasty, but considering what you get, it felt overpriced, and the portions were small. $50 for three people doesn't provide much food here. The okra was overcooked, and there wasn’t enough honey for the chicken. Additionally, biscuits would be a better choice with the chicken instead of bread. Overall, due to the small portions and the high prices, it was just average. Food: 4, Service: 3, Atmosphere: 3.
I was very disappointed with my experience at the restaurant. We waited for 30 minutes before anyone noticed that our order hadn’t been placed. By that time, we realized we couldn't wait any longer. Ironically, the staff was in a meeting and completely overlooked the customers. By the time we left, those who arrived before us had already finished their meals.
Gus's world-famous fried chicken is incredible! It features a beautifully crispy exterior and a tender, flavorful interior. The hackkartoffeln (potato pancakes) are a big hit and pair perfectly with the chicken. I also recommend the coleslaw to balance out the meal. I highly suggest you give this place a try!
If I were a chicken, I'd want to end up served at this restaurant when my time came. The chicken here is fantastic! The service is also very friendly.
