Hotel de France restaurant

My wife and I were taken for lunch by two friends. We booked in advance and my wife, whose French is excellent, told them when making the booking that one of the four of us was a vegetarian. They said this was noted and the chef would be told. We thought, given the rather ecstatic reviews by others, that this was going to be a cut above the average menu-du-jour place, and therefore that, despite local attitudes, they'd be creative enough to cope with a vegetarian.We were wrong. The waitress was friendly enough when we three omnivores ordered our steaks and magret from the a la carte menu, but when my wife said "I'm the vegetarian - I phoned yesterday" the response was a heavy sigh - clearly...

This establishment is under relatively new management. Back in 2001 we swore to never go back but now.....post 2012 a local lass and a Portuguese chef are offering top qualty fare. A quiet tuesday night for dinner did not get off to the best start as the waitress could not give me the code for the hotel's wifi.....I thought to have a confit de canard instead of the main courses on the menu (all more expensive) but this option or flexibility was declined.....so went for the 35 Euro Menu of a starter, main and dessert...all were superb.....foie gras with pacherence du vic-bilh wine jelly ( tiny but tasty)....entrecote cooked to perfection tasty and easy to cut with frites in the trendy bucket...

We visited this restaurant on a 'tripadvisor' review in the middle of january on a cold and wet evening. There were very few people in the restaurant which was large. The open fire wasn't lit so the atmosphere was dull. However, we were warmly welcomed by Virginie, one of the owners who explained what was on the menu and that there was no a la carte. There was a choice of two dishes for each of the three courses and as there were four of us, we were able to sample them all! Every dish was delicious; my Boeuf Bourguinonne was the best I've tasted and the cuttlefish was both tender and tasty. In our experience of rural France, a limited choice menu usually means the chef can make use of fresh...

Booked on the same day, good price. Very friendly family business. Rooms are clean, towels are fresh and the bed is comfy. Large window opens out onto the Main Street and lets I lots of fresh air on a stifling night.Restaurant is a nice surprise. Reasonable menu price, talented chef who knows how to cook (which is harder to find than you'd think). The fish was excellent. Nice selection of local wines. And again all served with charm and a smile.Would come again.

First time to south of France, recommended restaurant by TripAdvisor. It was absolutely gawgus little family run restaurant the quality, flavour and such a delightful lady running it, not to mention her delightful little girl too, our French is extremely minimal but they spoke little English with humour too, so between us we had a very special time, will be revisiting here before our return home.

Once again a big thank you for a super meal, your hosting and hospitality are great.Whilst we visit quite often never appear to serve the same menu at lunchtime, Imagination, well cooked and good presentation make this restaurant a super place to dine, be it lunch or evening menu. A great find in a small village in South West France.See you soon, a little gem.J

Friday 23 May 2014 - we thought we would treat ourselves to an evening meal in the restaurant - there was no-one at the desk, two members of staff arriving for work walked straight past us, and still no-one came to see who rang the bell. Don't bother if they can't be bothered!

The restaurant was empty except for 1 other table ... My starter was a 'messed up' smoked salmon. Smoked salmon is 1 of my favourites, but the chef attempted to 'adjust' the flavour by mashing it and combining it with other unsuitable ingredients - and...More

Probably the nicest meal I have ever had, would recommend to anyone who is looking for a really quality meal. The price is fairly high but you get what you pay and more. Brilliant atmosphere, brilliant service and really brilliant food
