Short review: Surprisingly bad duck (off night I guess. Some other dishes were solid. Could use more mala all around but I guess it appeals to some of the people going here.I was at this fancy Szechuan Sichuan Chinese spot with one of my usual groups with nine of us going. We 've spent around $45 for the following meal which was mostly because the Beijing Duck was quite expensive and frankly not that good. Some of the other dishes were good and overall our experience was OK. I tried to order one of the fancy teas on the menu but they were out of all of them outside of Jasmine so I stuck with water as the rest of the drink menu like the food menu is quite expensive and not really worth it. This place is absolutely terrible. I went with a group of friends as we’re all here visiting and have read it’s supposedly a good restaurant. The waiters didn’t know what they were doing and were extremely rude. One of the group members is vegetarian and when she asked if she could swap meat for tofu, considering there were only two vegetarian options, she was told that wouldn’t be a problem. Then, a different waiter came and began shouting at her for asking to swap tofu for meat, even though she was willing to pay for the switch, and was informed she could only remove meat and not make the swap. Came here with two sets of friends for dinner. The atmosphere was very nice and the restaurant also had an upstairs with classic Chinese decor. The food was mediocre and I would not recommend as a Chinese American myself. We had the spicy beef appetizer, sesame noodles, whole peking duck, snow peas, and a whole fish. The duck itself was actually very good it was probably the best thing there. You can take the duck bones home and make a nice broth with the bones. The wrappers that it came in was awful they were more like thick, white tortillas then the traditional thin wrappers. The condiments were also not fresh. The fish was decent it's a fixed cost at 52 so not bad.

Hwa Yuan in Chinatown is a reboot of an iconic 80s restaurant re-imagined as a 3-story upscale Szechuan restaurant serving our favorite peking duck in the city. We visited for a friend's birthday and ordered a whole Peking duck presented and served table-side. We made delicious (what were basically) peking duck tacos with thin pancakes, hoisin sauce, cucumber, and spring onion. The duck was rich and the crispy skin was heavenly. In addition to the duck we also enjoyed mapo tofu, shrimp fried rice, a rack of lamb chop szechuan. This is a great spot to enjoy a large group dinner and some truly delicious Peking duck. We found this restaurant during our last trip to NYC and loved the Bejing Duck it was super delicious and also served the traditional way! This time we didn´t go for a starter and focused on the duck only and it was again amazing! The meat was still super juicy while the skin was crisp absolutely delicious! We will for sure come back next time.

The food was good, but quite underwhelming for it’s price point. Maybe it’s because we didn’t get the famous duck, but it was food you could easily find around Chinatown. All the workers were very attentive and we appreciated that. The bathroom was a bit shabby too which made the experience just not up to par.Food: 4/5
