After reading great reviews online, I suggested to a friend that we meet for dinner here. It was a cold, wet and windy Melbourne night and I was looking forward to some Italian food, especially because I hadn't had 'proper' Italian for a long time. The service was very friendly and efficient. There was a nice cosy atmosphere, with only a handful of tables inside and attentive, happy staff. We ordered a nice New Zealand sauvignon blanc to start, and decided to order the rice balls as an entree. Three decent sized portions arrived. They had porcini mushroom and taleggio inside. About six shop fronts down from Smith Street on Johnson Street Fitzroy in the direction towards Brunswick is Ibla Cucina Italiana. The long bar and tables running along one side opens to an quite large dining area where you can just spy the kitchen staff hard at it preparing some of the best Italian food either side of Lygon Street. Big call? Believe me. You'd have to be crazy not to try it.A fine selection of wines including Italian and Sicilian and a long but varied menu - all that will gladden the heart and unwind a nerves. This is a really very good operation and very professional - a friendly, separate beverage and food staff who will also give you good advice if you are visiting Italy...
A small, cozy, unpretentious restaurant, impeccable service with wait staff who actually knew their food and seem genuinely enthused about their job. Small menu but with unusual combinations which really worked (pasta with swordfish and an eggplant and mint puree...amazing!!). I could see the chef through the window actually looking at the customers reactions to the food and a genuine look of pleasure when he could see people really enjoying it. Good size servings which hit the spot perfectly. Tucked away in Fitzroy is this cozy and homey Italian place with warmest of service and delicious food. The charcuterie platter of sliced meats were tasty and generous. We shared 2 mains; the beef ragu and the ink squid pasta with garlic chill clams. Both were warm and hearty. Their wine list is wide and we were recommended a bottle of Sicilian which was smooth and rich. I thought the star of the night was actually a humble side dish of pizza dough off-cuts which they fried up. I cannot explain how tasty these pillowy dough bites were! I had the risotto of the day: quality and clever use of ingredients. The cheese platter was original and interesting too. Friendly and efficient waiters. Definitely a place to try.

Easy place to get to with plenty of street parking. The food was amazing as it is predominantly Italian with an Asian or Spanish twist.
