Walked in here on a Tuesday evening and there was no one inside. Place was a lot smaller than it appeared in photos and there are only about 3 4 tables inside, and one of them was occupied by the owner. It's a small family runned restaurant and we were greeted by the owner or matriarch of the family. She seemed unprepared for business and was preoccupied. We didn't mind and sat down. I lived in Indonesia for six years and I have been waiting to find a place that has authentic Indonesian food. Java Indonesian restaurant in Brooklyn was like a homecoming for me. We ordered ayam goreng or fried chicken, beef rendang and chicken satay. The ayam goreng was a crispy chicken breast that came in a rich sauce of kecap manis (dark, sweet soy sauce) over a bed of lettuce. The beef rendang was incredibly flavorful I could easily taste the lemongrass and spices. It was stewed perfectly with fall apart beef cubes in a coconut milk based sauce. Java is an authentic Indonesian restaurant in Brooklyn. The food is delicious and the service is always friendly. We ordered chicken satays, fried tempe (soybean cake) and sayur lodeh (vegetable cooked with spice and simmered in coconut milk. We’ve been coming back several times since we took these three photos and we have also tried the Rijsttafel. The taste of food at Java reminds me of home cooked meal back in my childhood in Jakarta. For those who want a true authentic Indonesian meal in Brooklyn, I highly recommend Java. Try to come early when they’re open because the tables fill up very quickly ?
Don't ever judge a book by its cover. The place is small but the owner welcomed us like family. Started with the chicken satay. Chicken was good but next time I'm not getting peanut butter sauce on it. Ordered the beef randang and shrimp frice rice and it was amazing. The chef made it extra spicy for us. Just the way we like it. Nice to find a place we can go to ever week or other week.PS place is halal and they don't serve pork

We are familiar with Indonesian food and this has to be the best Indonesian food we've had outside of Indonesia! We had the rijstaafel, which was amazing each tasty little dish better than the one before it! We left very full and very happy and the service was warm and friendly. I highly recommend this restaurant! We traveled from Long Island to eat here, and it was so worth the trip!
When friends or family come to town, this is where I take them. Food is delicious, flavorful, and fresh. The people who work here are friendly, and while the space is small, it's cozy and pleasant. Last night, we got takeout, and the quality was just as good as eating in. Acar salad and Nasi Goreng were amazing!Food: 5/5
this restaurant has the worst service of any place i have ever been to. after 1.5 hours, our entrees were not even ready, and they were being very secretive about when our food was going to be ready.on top of that, it took 50 min for our calamari entree to come out. genuinely the worst service i have ever encountered.
Amazing Rijsttafel! Went with a group of people and there was more than enough food to go around. Very clean and lively atmosphere. Excellent service, kept checking in to make sure we had everything we needed. Will definitely go back on my next trip!

Real Indonesian food is hard to find and this place has it. Large selection well prepared. Friendly and helpful staff cater to the clients. Limited beer and wine selection.Food: 5/5
