We were heading to Lethbridge, but our tummy's told us we needed to stop prior, so we ended up eating in Fort Macleod. This is a pretty town, and Johnny's was a great place to eat. Firstly, it is spotlessly clean despite being in a very historic building, with tin ceilings, etc. Secondly, the food was great. The wonton soup had buckets of flavour and the spring roll was really crunchy and tasty, without being oily or greasy. We had the dinner for two, and was the Ginger Beef ever good - crispy without being chewy, nice subtle heat. All the veggies were fresh, not frozen. This is a small town restaurant, and so we understand they can't really put out ragingly spiced food, but the spices were...
At 8 pm we jumped into this restaurant after that all others in Fort Mac Leod were already closed. The owner told us that he could prepare for us just food to take away because it was too late, so I told him that in Italy we start eating after 8.00 p.m. . Taken from its pride he said us that we could sit down. Well I can say that the food we tried was really delicious and the portion were really big. At the end when we had the bill...we remained happily surprised because we paid just 38 $ for a full meal and two beers. It's one of the Best Chinese style restaurant where I've ever been.
We arrived in Johnny's on a busy busy Friday evening. We had to wait 30 minutes for a carry out meal. The place was full of what looked like regulars and a a few were having a special meal before going to a show in the Empress Theater (oldest running theater in Alberta). We were not disappointed with the meal when we got home and the wait was justified. Please note that all Johnny's menu is MSG free.
Having decided to drive through Fort Macleod on the way back from Fernie to Calgary, Johnny's was a pleasant surprise on the route to Calgary. The food (Reuben sandwich and seafood chowder) was frankly delicious and the service was quick and friendly. A really great choice all around. The motel clerk said they had the best Won Ton Soup in town. Everything looked good on the menu. I ordered the Combo for one. It consisted of Won Ton Soup, Stir fried mixed vegetables, chicken fried rice, and ginger beef. Excellent meal, great choice. Good price, it is a tourist town! The server was great, friendly.
Pleasant, great booths, excellent hot pot, extremely fast service, open and cosy on a snowy New Year's Day! Certified chef has served visiting stars like randy Bachman,Judy Collins and Michelle Wright. We'll be back.
My beef dip was average, the salad was fresh. Lovely owners and clean atmosphere for the age of the restaurant. I would come back and eat here again.

The freshness of the ingredients and general quality of the food will bring us back to Johnny's whenever we are in Fort Macleod.
