Late review, but we went to Kunio's last week Friday. That service was spot on! Staff were consistently checking on us! I went for an early father's day and my dad really enjoyed it. He was stoked that there was a Lobster and Steak Combination! I too, instantly knew that was going to be my order. He also enjoyed some shrimp tempura (which is what made him first select this place). He says it was crispy and he wants to definitely be back for it! The salmon was nice and fatty, and super melt in your melt almost! The lobster was cooked perfectly. And let me just say.... The butter did not disappoint for the steak! Always on my radar finally had lunch here with my sister and brother in law . It was very busy to start off they open 10:30 am we got there around 10:10 am and there was 5 deep of people already . We got seated right away the waitress drop off our menu w/water than we ordered. Our food came out pretty quick the service was right on. I ordered their Fish Teri w/Shrimp tempura. Along with the meal comes with Miso soup Edamame, gobo, vinegar seaweed. The shrimp tempura was very good lightly battered and they use the whole shrimp not half shrimp like most places . So we signed up on the waiting list and the lady said about 30 min. We waited and when they finally got to us they asked if we would be ok sitting back to back in booths we said that's fine. Then the lady comes out and calls someone below us on the list and sits us on the back to back booths. She then sits another group of four below us and then we asked why weren't we seated? Then she said oh we're going to seat you guys together instead. Now we waited another 20-30 minutes to get seated. They're very inefficient when it comes to seating people. Be prepared to wait as long as an hour or more if you want to eat here. The food is good but the service on the front end is horrible. No one knows...
Been going here for years and it is one of our family favorites for sure. Not only is it close to home but service is great, it's my favorite misoyaki butterfish on the island and my daughter's favorite miso soup and rolls, and my husband loves the sukiyaki. Steak is pretty tender. I always wish the onions were cooked down a little more but not a big deal. Parking can get busy but you can always park on the Safeway side and quickly walk across. My friend and I stopped by for lunch after hiking the ridge above Hanauma Bay. We both ordered Tempura shrimp and Miso Butter Fish. The meal came with salad, appetizer, and miso soup. The shrimp was perfectly breaded and came with soy sauce. The tempura also included some vegetables. The Miso Butter Fish was tender and full of flavor. The service was quick and friendly. The restaurant was located in a shopping area, and the interior was clean and inviting. I will definitely be back to try other items on the menu.
The food at this restaurant has always been excellent, as has the service. Even on the busiest days, the food comes out quickly. The main issue is the wait for a table, as reservations are not accepted and wait times can be up to an hour. It is a good idea to arrive when they open or during off-peak times. On this visit, both bathroom toilets were not working, which was a big inconvenience. The interior is beautifully designed with a pleasing Japanese aesthetic.
I went in February 2024 for the first time for my grandma's 80th birthday and we all really enjoyed it. The food (teishoku or ala carte) was really solid Japanese food, all well executed. Casual vibe and service was quick, efficient and friendly. I can see why it is very busy and popular on that side of the island. I highly recommend the miso butterfish and fried oysters.
I have been coming to Restaurant Kunio for over 15 years, and it is still my favorite Japanese restaurant on Oʻahu, as well as one of my favorite restaurants overall. The food is consistently delicious, the prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly, and the restaurant maintains an elegant yet unpretentious atmosphere. Thank you for the wonderful memories!
