Gluten, or rather, avoiding it!This restaurant does not advertise that it provides gluten free meals, but it does and that is well worth knowing if you suffer from Coeliac Disease.We eat there with someone with this complaint and asked the owner if it was possible to choose gluten free dishes from the menu. It certainly was (almost everything could be adjusted)! and the greatest of care was taken to ensure that we all enjoyed our meal. Saw the set lunch at €16 including wine. However, decide to order off the menu. While there was a good selection we were advised that the fish starter of coquille san Jaques was on. So, we ordered for one. It was to be honest quite nice but not great. The main fish was salmon and this was really a simple slice of salmon served without any sauce. My main was the duck Brest and it was fine. Nothing special. With a desert of lemon slice and creme bruille and a single cafe, the bill came to €71.50 For what we got at the time of day I really felt hard done! We only chose this restaurant as it was sunny on that side of the square. I will sit in the shade again!
We had a reservation for our group of eight and our table was waiting for us in the perfect location under the large awning. We all decided to try the lunch menu that had choices from two appetizers, two main courses, desserts and coffee. We had a couple of carafes of the the house wines (rose and red.) The appetizers were a choice of salad or ham with a small salad. The main course was white fish or beef. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. The desserts were a choice of ice creams or chocolate mousse cake. There was not much flavor to the cake at all so this was a little disappointing. The beef was as expected but not at all special.
This restaurant is located a few steps from he hotel where we were staying. We ordered from the chalkboard. I had a grilled shellfish starter and my wife had a quail terrine; both were well prepared. For mains we had a fish dish and a poultry dish in a champagne sauce. Dessert was an exceptionally good citron fromage. We drank local open wines including a nice blanquette ancestral which became my wife's favourite on the trip. Good value for money. Very nice and friendly staff. Whitebeard83

Had trouble deciding out of many restaurants round the square but the menu here looked good. We nearly left though as there were four of us and the waiter wouldn't let us sit at the only vacant table in the shade as it was for six. The fan salad starter was good, as was the fish main course. My husband's cheesecake dessert was better than my choice. At 15 euros it was a good meal.
We went to La Carabène twice during our holiday in the area and loved it both times. Make sure you take a menu as it's by far the best deal. The house wine is cheap and good too at 6 euros for a half litre carafe. Loved the owl decor. Definite recommendation.
The food here is good local produce with excellent service. We ate here twice and the 2nd night when the Tuesday night market is on was magical! Loved it!
We had a late night meal here and loved the salads. The prices were very good as well. We enjoyed the cassoulet, but the salad with duck was the best.

Less than half hour drive from Carcassonne, La Carabene is located in the heart of very historic small town Limoux.
Wonderful food. Great variety on the menu. Good prices and friendly staff. Went two nights in a row. Wonderful!
