La Matelote - Tisch reservieren

We love coming to Le Matelote. Yes, it is a quirky hotel but we love the little touches, and we love the bar/ lounge where we have an aperitif before dining. The hotel room was much larger than a normal Brit hotel room. The people in reception do talk to you if you take the trouble to try to speak to them. The room is always cleaned to a very high standard. The spa pool is small but once you get used to the cold feel it’s exhilarating. The restaurant is super. We love eating here, yes the waiters don’t speak very good English but we try to speak French in their country- as we are not in the uk . We have not had a bad meal here, yet. I do grant you that the language barrier, makes it tricky....

Having noted the often quite divergent opinions of various reviewers I was interested to see what La Matelote was offering. My view for what it is worth aligns very closely to the previous reviewer. I do not consider this to be fine dining in the Michelin sense of the word. It is a good restaurant possibly relying too much on its past but lacking in any passion for the food or the dining experience it is offering. Why would you poach skate wings when the very act of poaching has a detrimental effect on the texture of the fish. Far better grilled. Other dishes lacked the sophistication of flavours I would expect at this purported level of cuisine. If you want a good meal then it’s fine but no...

We went to La Matelote to enquire about them catering for our daughter‘s wedding. The food was excellent and Stellios speaks very good English with a gorgeous French accent) We chose them, and the bride and groom returned to do a food tasting. The wedding took place in a chateau near Amiens in April last year. On the day you could not find fault with anything. The food for 120 people) was incredible, perfectly prepared scallops, rare beef and literally a room full of desserts. I couldn‘t recommend them more highly. Only downside is that they‘re a hard act to follow!

We went thunking we would have an exceptional culinary experience, given that the place had a michelin star. We were disappointed with the unrefined cuisine we were served. The amuses and bread were not very tasty. The first course was too big, and quite bland. The ‘aile de raie’ was huge, too buttery and the winter vegetables did not match well with the dish. Desert again unrefined. All in all a disappointing experience.

We stayed here for 2 nights. We had a half board package which offered wonderful value for money. The food was outstanding. Plentiful too. The presentation was fantastic. The staff were amazing. So professional and well organised.
