Popped into Le Cafe Flo for a coffee and croissant. Good coffee and a tasty, large, flaky croissant. Had a peak at the blackboard menu and low and behold: Never mind your escargot - there were "snails in pastry" on the menu, plus a host of other French-inspired treats. I look forward to returning to Le Cafe Flo to try some of the interesting breakfast and lunch dishes. All tables completely full when I popped in, so I sat at the bar-height table in the window. This cafe must be doing something right to be so popular. Friendly staff, fast service and lots of newspapers and magazines to browse through if your eating solo.By sharing your experiences, you're helping travellers make better choice...
My wife and I first met proprietor Florian decades ago waiting in an inner Melbourne French restaurant. By chance we met again years later as if we had never parted.He now greets us in his own crowded Thornbury establishment, in French and by our first names. As in any café serving coffees, teas and light meals, it's the convivial atmosphere which draws the crowds. Florian is a master at making his guests feel at home, greeting everybody personally and asking about family members by name. He serves wonderful French pastries, and he regularly serves magnificent three-course fixed menu evening meals to his discerning clients.No wonder then that the café has a queue out of the door on weekends.
We only discovered le cafe Flo in the middle of the year, but have been back over and over, and have brought friends and family there as well.A lovely French cafe, often full of people practising their conversational French while they eat the delicious food. The quiches and crepes are great but for our money you can't go past the French Onion Soup and Farmer's platter of meats, cheeses, bread and salad. Really magnificent food and lovely ambience - and super fun menus, bound inside old French LP record covers.
If you're after some French vibes in Thornbury this is the place to come. From the music, pictures on the walls, to the waiters, and the gorgeous croissants and cakes lining the counter, you're all set. They serve a French hot menu also, with snails (escargots) and French onion soup, just to name a few menu items. On this, my first visit, l had the tarte au citron, lemon tart, which was superb. I'll be back to try the escargots!Wait til you see what the menu comes in - classic!

Love this cafe it serves actual authentic French food and amazing coffee. The staff are extreamly friendly and decor is spot on. This cafe makes u feel like you steped into paris. My fave thing at this cafe is the little homemade salted caramel cube they give you for free with your hot beverage. If you love everything French this is the place to go. If you do go, dont forget to say bonjur to Flo.
Yes it exists. Affordable true French cafe with the friendly staff (& customers!). I've tried a fair bit on the menu-incl. onion soup for breakfast(!). It's all great. The casual music is great for the atmosphere. They cater for kids (with a cup style to suit their age) & books in French & English (phew!) Grab a little Madeleine on the way out too.
At a time when cafes are popping up all over Thornbury and Northcote and we are spoiled for choices, Cafe Flo consistently delivers quality coffee, pastries and tantalisingly good french fare, for breakfast, lunch or dinner. A traditional cafe au lait will stir the senses in an intimate cafe with personable staff. Love it!
Such a lovely little local cafe. Had passed by many times and now eregret not popping in earlier. The staff were so friendly and although we waited some time for our food, it was worth the wait. The decor is charming and the atmosphere was great with so many people popping in to pick up a croissant or baguette.

This is such a lovely cafe to relax and enjoy lovely French food, cooked by French chefs and owned and run by a friendly Frenchman. A lovely atmosphere to just enjoy a glass of wine and read a book if not eating.
Perfect place to drop in for a delicious coffee and a treat. Service and food always good. Special touch is the menu inside old French LP covers.
