I used to absolutely love this place when I lived in Melbourne and went regularly. On a recent visit back to the city I took a few friends to what was on of my favourite places for food and we were so disappointed. The staff member who was working at the time was incredibly rude, slow at taking orders, told us we would get our drinks if he could be bothered to make them for us and took our order incorrectly. Turns out he couldn't be bothered to make our green teas and coffees so we didn't get our drinks at all. We also had to ask for water 3 times before he remembered to bring it over (something that used to happen as soon as you sat down) 2 of our plates of food had hair in it, the gentlema...
Just as the subject line said: I like the idea very much of a pay as you see fit, but we had a green Thai curry which was in a medium sized bowl and it contained a not so spicy nor interesting sauce, and mine had 2 small pieces of potato and a small broccoli head. It was mostly fairly watered down green curry sauce. It came with white rice. Maybe we just happen to get a not-so-interesting meal. I saw someone else had some Japanese pancakes and they looked interesting. The environment was simple and nice and it was friendly. Like I said, I liked the idea. More restaurants might like to take up the idea of paying as one sees fit. I think many restaurants and cafes including vegan ones overchar...
I love the philosophy of this restaurantThe reality of our visit did not unfortunatelyMeet our expectations. The quality of our food was not great. The extra details to attention were missing that would have made a difference to our meal such as an indifferent waitress and no water offered for our meal. When I went to pay i had already decided to pay $50 for three meals- seemed fair. The waitress misheard me and took $5 payment without batting an eyelid. My take on this was that many people are being cheapskates and paying ridiculously small amounts so the restaurant has had no option but to lower the standard of dishes. This place has always had a great reputation but sadly we won't be back...
We went here with friends, we are backpacking and so the price here is reasonable compared with most restaurants in Melbourne. Pay what you feel, though they do have a guide for what to pay, I heard that another restaurant had to close because people were taking the ****. I am vegetarian and find that lots of veggie restaurants are expensive, so happy that this place exists.Food is simple but well cooked, we had the green curry and the thali which were both good, they do pad the meals out a little with potatoes but I happen to like spud so didn't bother me. We had visited the st kilda restaurant several years ago and had a fantastic experience. Visited again recently and were not disappointed! The food is amazing, the service was fantastic, all the volunteers / staff were lovely and accomodating. We tried most of the options on the menu between our group and everything seemed great. It's a great concept and cause, we will definitely continue to visit their establishments. If you visit please pay what you can - let's keep them open!
Stopped in and got the last table. Lucky us when we ordered a Thai Green Curry and a Thali plate. Wonderful flavour and good service. Pay what it's worth or what you can afford is a great concept but hopefully people give generously for this organization as they need our support. Great experience. Will stop again.

What an excellent concept - yes the food is simple, but it does taste good! I visited twice and had the Thai green curry, and the thali. Both really yummy and filling.
