My son ordered the Moule Frites and when it arrived, it looked good until you came past the upper level of the shells and everything was frozen. And if I'm freezing, I mean that ice still sticks to the shells (see photo). We pointed out to our server that, in my opinion, could be the owner that the shells were frozen. She looked stunned and returned the pot back to the kitchen. About 10 minutes later she returned the pot, thermonuclear hot. So hot that she couldn't even open the lid... so what does she do? She asked for the napkins on our rounds to open the lid. No excuse and still charged for the plate of frozen shells. Escoffier rolls in his grave.
We went north through Aniane and stopped here for coffee. It was immediately served by a pleasant waitress. Coffee was good and what it should be. We came through town and thought for a late lunch. The 3 of us chose omelette du jour. It was a vegetable that day and excellent. Freshly cooked. The chips were hot directly from the pan crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. The small salad served with was fresh and with a delicious dressing. The same waitress served us and smiled after their busy morning work still and pleasant.
We were recommended to try a particular restaurant in Aniane, but we arrived too early in the city so decided to sit and have a drink first in L'Esplanade. Then we made the stupid decision to stay and eat. Two very mediocre meals and an oversized bill later and we recognized our mistake. When we were asked the next day if we had visited the recommended restaurant and we said no, the lady's face said everything when we told her where she went.
We spent a couple of weeks in Aniane and enjoyed the welcome extended bye the staff at Bar l'Esplanade. Our daily excursions to access wifi were made enjoyable by an an aperitif and the occasional plat du jour, the latter being very tasty and excellent value.
