For drinks, we ordered Coke and Sprite. Regarding the food, I really enjoyed the Dandan Noodles with minced chicken in a lightly spiced Szechuan sauce. It reminded me of ramen soup, and the broth was quite tasty. However, I found the diced beef steak with watercress, peppers, onions, and special sauce to be average. It came with a side of white rice, but the steak was a bit tough to chew. As for the Stewed Pork Belly with Taro in coconut sauce, I was disappointed. I ordered the sweet and sour pork, which came with a scoop of white rice. The pork was acceptable but a bit fatty and chewy. There were only three or four small pieces of pineapple, onion, and pepper mixed in, which made for a very small portion considering the price. The sweet and sour sauce was good, though. I also ordered a winter melon pastry that was flaky, but in an unpleasantly dry way, and it lacked flavor, which was a significant disappointment. I learned my lesson: it’s better to take the time to walk to the main entrance of the Huntington Library and eat at the café instead! The restaurant is situated within the Chinese gardens of the Huntington Library. Patrons place their orders at the counter and can choose to sit either in the outdoor patio by the pond or in the beautifully designed indoor area. The ambiance is truly lovely. I tried the shrimp spring rolls, which were delicious; the shrimp was juicy, plump, and abundant—truly a delightful surprise! I also had the tapioca and taro in coconut milk, which was light and refreshing on a warm day. While it is more expensive than other Chinese restaurants in the area, it serves as a charming snack and a great place to take a break during your exploration of this picturesque setting.
I had a rather unpleasant experience at this restaurant. The cashier shouted at a customer behind me for picking up the tea sample containers. I felt awful because I had done the same without any reprimand. There's no sign indicating that you shouldn't lift the containers, and considering the type of clientele that frequents this place, it's unprofessional to have someone yelling at customers. As for the food, it was mediocre at best; the lotus cake and winter melon cake were particularly bad, and they didn't even get the almond cookies right. Overall, my experience was just okay. I had a disappointing experience at this restaurant. I arrived just two minutes after 4:30 and wanted to order a lemonade. There was still lemonade available in the machine, which only takes about a minute to prepare, and other customers were still in line. However, the staff refused to serve me, which was quite frustrating. What a letdown.
The food here is decent, but keep in mind that you’re mainly paying for the view, the location, and the fact that it’s in a museum. Most of the items are fried, likely to speed up service and keep the line moving. Eating at Panda Express would probably be healthier and at least 50% cheaper.
The service was poor and the food was below average. The only positive aspects of this restaurant are the availability of vegan options and its convenient location within the Huntington Gardens.
