Very nice nice Mexican restaurant located in downtown Alpena. This business has the typical selections you expect to see at a sit down Mexican restaurant where the food and the ingredients are fresh and the dishes well made and very tasty. For my entree I had the Burrito Azteca that had chorizo, carnita's, grilled onions, topped with red, green and white sauce and garnished sour cream and avocado. Very very tasty. The burrito was accompanied by Mexican rice and beans that were equally well made and tasty. the true testament of how good this dish was is that I cleaned my plate which I normally dont do and usually have food left over on my plate. the meal was accompanied by gratis house chips...
In town with friends to do a little shopping on the one day all but two restaurants close down! Never feeling sad about choosing Mexican in any form, we all opted for Mangos. The service was excellent. I'll make a note here to say they have an option to add a round of drinks for the kitchen staff to your tab and I love that they do that!! I sure was excited about the Margaritas we ordered a pitcher but alas, they weren't so good. Too sweet, no lime, felt like a fluorescent colored mix and not a very good one. I ordered two types of tacos. They were not great, but I managed to eat them. The shredded pork taco was tender but unseasoned and lukewarm. The chicken taco was hot but just mediocre. My sister got the taco salad, and it was truly disgusting. The taco shell was overcooked, so we sent it back for a replacement. While the new shell was decent, the taco meat inside resembled mush—it looked like dog food and tasted awful. She couldn't eat any of it, and the bartender kindly removed it from the bill as well. Having spent my life working as a chef in the food industry, I would never dream of serving food that falls below these standards. Mango's deserves less than one star.
At Mangos in Alpena, Michigan, the ambiance was undeniably warm and inviting, creating the perfect backdrop for what could have been a delightful evening. The food and staff are great though one time we went the lettuce in my burrito was old and slimy, the manager gave my girlfriend and I a new burrito but the whole time we felt like we were having daggers glared at us. The crowd is usually a bit loud, talking and socializing. The entrance feels cramped and like you are entering an underground night club but for the most part what you see is visibly clean. Definitely the best place for mexican food in Alpena though.
The atmosphere is fun and the service was great. The food was disappointing. I had carne asada street tacos. Lots of meat but it was dry and tough and the tortillas were barely warmed. My husband had a fajita quesadilla and was also not impressed. Not sure we'll go back. Three stars is generous based on the service and ambiance. Food was less than 2 stars based on our experience.
Went here Saturday and got a margarita enchiladas. Everything was covered in salt first sip of the margarita I got a literal mouth full of salt. The rice was coated in salt I couldn't even eat it. The chicken in the enchiladas was very dry and the only thing that I did eat was the beans. Atmosphere was great but the food drinks were nasty.
The ten taco combination was amazing. I suggest the Street Tacos above all, then the Crazy Tacos! Yummm! I usually prefer the Tawas location, but the Alpena location offers a nicer atmosphere. The salmon dish is outstanding, and while the traditional Mexican dishes are good, they don't quite match the quality at Tawas. The service has consistently been good.
