Martines has been my favourite dining experience for over a decade in Comox. Excellent locale, championing local meats and vegetables along with local wines, this unique experience combined with excellent service was a dining event and one my wife and I enjoyed for many a...year. In general, it is hard to find a really satisfying dining experience in Courtenay and its surrounding neighbourhoods/towns. Expensive restaurants in Courtenay and its surrounding areas did not meet our expectations (too expensive for what it is). Martine's Bistro is a fair value for the...money. Restaurant is located in beautiful Comox with great views of the bay and distant mountains. The restaurant was busy but with reservations we still managed to sit outside on the patio which is first come first served. The four of us ordered some wine...and beer then some appetizers which were all good. Then the main course was ordered and as they were busy it took awhile to reach us which was ok. The meals we had ordered were not quite what was expected when served but the mix-up was resolved quickly. Walked into Black Fin across the way and were turned away with honestly, kind of a scolding for not having a reservation, but we hadn’t seen one person on the street? Across the square was Martine’s. Greeted immediately and told they had one table reserved...for someone else in an hour we went for it, drawn in by the beautiful art and homey feel. Service was prompt, friendly and no nonsense which I love. And let me tell you, I’ve worked in many restaurants for many years, and I’ll bet any one of you that there is a short, grumpy genius of an Eastern European chef back there who is making that MAGIC. The menu looked great and the server was friendly. Dinner did not live up to expectations. I had the halibut from the daily features. The outside was tough, the inside was watery, and the taste was bland. The accompanying risotto included shrimp that had not...been fully peeled so I was crunching on shell. The vegetables were cooked well and were the highlight of the meal. My partner had the cheese tortellini. The sauce was good as were the vegetables. It appeared, however, that the tortellini was not drained well after cooking. The dish was watery which took away from the overall taste of the meal. Disappointing given the great reviews. Maybe we were there on an off night?
I'm not sure where the good ratings are coming from, but our experience, twice now completely justify giving no more than one star for this restaurant. They completely rush you out of there. You are still chewing your last bite of appetizer when themain arrives. They just want you in and out asap and it is felt. The fish was so over cooked and the amount of pepper used insome dishes are unreal. We will never return to this over priced restaurant. They need to learn that people go out to dinner torelax and enjoy, not be rushed out the door. If people want to eat and run, they will grab take-out somewhere. Show respectfor your customers.
Had a lovely Sunday evening dinner here recently.Windy and pouring rain outside,warm and comfortable inside.Nice ambiance,low lighting creates a nice mood Typically they would have nice easy live music. Sunday eve. is Prime Rob night.Can't go wrong with sumptuous yorkies and fresh local veg. Service...was done oh so well We will return

We had an excellent dinner with our friends. On Sunday there is live music which made the dining delightful. The Red Snapper was delicious and all our meals were very well presented. The cook and staff are very skilled. Well managed establishment.
