I drove past this place last week when it was closed and was excited to see a genuine Italian deli. When I returned to Olympia yesterday and found them open, I decided to stop in for an authentic Italian sub. Unfortunately, I couldn't have been more disappointed! First of all, a true Italian sub should have mortadella, but this one did not. While the meats and cheeses on the sandwich were decent—hence the two-star rating—the bread was the real letdown. It was dry, chewy, and lacked flavor. I got a whole sandwich, which they cut in half and wrapped separately, which I appreciated. The establishment is clean and operates efficiently, with quick service. I ordered a salami sandwich, but it turned out to be very bland and lacking in flavor. When I tried a piece of the salami on its own, I could hardly identify it by taste, as it had virtually no flavor. The cheese and bread were just as unremarkable. On the plus side, the ingredients were fresh, and the prices were reasonable. However, the clam chowder was also somewhat forgettable and bland.
The food is amazing! I just wish they were open later! By the time I'm hungry for dinner and decide I want to eat here, 9 times out of 10 they're closed already! A couple times I've ordered at the last minute and got there a couple minutes before they close and the staff was always very sweet and understanding. Everything is made fresh, daily. I recommend trying the homemade chili, the southwest salad and the big cookies they have. It is SO good!
Now, while I’ve had much better subs elsewhere—I'm somewhat of a sub connoisseur—the bread needs to be good and the ingredients have to have flavor, and Meconi's definitely delivers on that. It may not compare to Bronx Salumeria or Katz's Famous Deli, but in Olympia, it's a solid choice—maybe even a bronze medalist in a bigger city.

While trying to order… employee Elle came out in front of my 5 year old daughter and was cussing on her phone behind the register. Very inappropriate. Heard her yelling in the back too and at her employees. Disgusting. Based on previous reviews she should be fired. Not coming back.
Called in for a hot sub at 6:05 pm and was informed they already turned off the grill for the night. An hour before they close. I understand trying to leave on time, but that's rediculous.
I can't pass through Olympia without grabbing a Meconi's Italian. Consistently delicious. Fast and friendly service. 10/10 would recommend!
Just moved here from the Midwest and definitely will be a new regular! The best bread and amazing food for a great price!!
