We booked to come for our first anniversary based on a recommendation from others. Upon arrival were very disappointed to see only 2 vegetarian dishes available (one containing peanuts) however the owner was more than happy to explain the reasons why this is the case and even offered an additional meal that could be vegetarian, which was amazing. The drinks were absolutely spot on and the treacle bread was absolutely to die for. The owner even explained how he makes it and the process for it as well as bringing out his 3kg tub of product ready to be made. Was stopping off in Newmarket and wanting to take people for Sunday lunch. I found this place through Top Table and the web site of the Merry Monk seemed to have an interesting menu a cut above your average lunch. We were not disappointed this place is a little gem. To give some outstanding ratings is not something I would do lightly having eaten at Heston Blumenthals Dinner at the Mandarin Hotel. It isn 't the same but to see people provide this level of service, quality of ingredients, great cooking presentation in a small village, we were hugely impressed. Wow this is the best meal out I’ve had recently. And the service and surroundings were lovely too. Highly recommended. I had the chicken schnitzel which was very tasty indeed and the sticky toffee pudding which was equally delicious. Even the bread rolls to start were lovely! Parking: Smallish carpark at rear.
