I had high hopes for this restaurant as it had been recommended to me numerous times. However, I was ultimately disappointed. I ordered the twice-cooked pork and the dinosaur roll, while my friend had the sesame chicken with chicken fried rice. The roll was mediocre and the salad greens were from a bag. The pork tasted old and sour, so I asked for a different dish. The waitress was not very happy about it but reluctantly replaced it with an orange shrimp dish. Unfortunately, the shrimp dish was incredibly spicy to the point of being unpleasant, with an overwhelming amount of chili. I called ahead to place my dinner order and then picked it up. The restaurant had a sleek, upscale, and trendy atmosphere. I imagine dining in would have been even better. The prices were a bit higher compared to other Chinese restaurants, but the food was excellent. The quality, freshness, ingredients, preparation, and portion sizes were all top-notch. We have been to the restaurants all around Mulan, but had never been there. They have a BOOMING take out business. We were able to dine inside, with appropriate COVID measures. The food was, in a word, WOW!!!! Our waiter, Mark, was very well versed on the menu and extremely nice. The service was impeccable. When your Asian meal is cooked by Mr. Song you just know it’s gonna be good. His understanding of ingredients and how to layer them resulted in perfectly cooked shrimp and depth of flavors that reaching the sublime. We have visited many restaurants in the area, but had never been to this one. They have a thriving takeout service. We were able to dine inside, following COVID guidelines. The food was amazing! Our server, Mark, was knowledgeable about the menu and very friendly. The service was excellent. When your meal is prepared by Mr. Song, you know it will be delicious. He expertly layers flavors and ingredients for perfectly cooked shrimp. Owner Matt Kan and GM Monica Patrick have created a wonderful atmosphere in the artsy Cooper-Young neighborhood of Memphis. Mulan serves meat dishes but they have many vegan and vegetarian options. In a city where this is not so common, I was excited to eat there! I ordered salt and pepper tofu and it was seriously delicious. My husband ordered tofu curry and said it was really good. Our friend ordered a hot pot and he gobbled up the whole thing- spicy! Big portions, too! Definitely recommend for people who need a change from the very few vegan restaurants in Memphis and/or who are just looking for a good meal!
We started with the scallion pancakes which were absolutely delicious. We moved onto to have the honey walnut shrimp which was so full of flavor. We also had chicken fried rice which we enjoyed. In addition, we had the duck duo which was wonderful. We are from out of town and we’ were searching for a Chinese restaurant of high caliber. We couldn’t have asked for anything more. Absolutely recommending.
The restaurant offers a variety of vegetarian options and a wide selection of tofu dishes. The tofu was perfectly fried and delicious. Be sure to inform your server that you are vegan so they can ensure your meal is free of meat and eggs, and that all sauces are vegan. The portions are generous and I highly recommend this place.
The restaurant had a cozy family atmosphere, but they should consider having security as an unruly individual came in and acted extremely rude. The food was decent overall, but I was not a fan of their sushi as it tasted stale and seemed to be made the day before. It's worth giving them a try if you've never been before.
