We weren't planning on stopping, but caught between flooded rivers the choices were limited.Arriving in early afternoon, six of us in two cars booked the remaining rooms for us to bunk overnight, then settled in for really good value lunch. There's not much here- a good eatery, bar, walks down to the river. But it's really good. The rooms are very basic (bed, wardrobe and bar fridge - oh and air conditioning) but clean and comfortable. Same with bathrooms/showers - very clean. Rooms are pretty cheap - $60/single and $70/double - they only had one double available (they have cabins as well but they were booked so we didn't get to see these). The power goes off at 10pm so make sure your phone is...

Heading for Cooktown from the far north coast past Cairns, you climb the Range to Mt Molloy and head north. And the Palmer River Roadhouse is the perfect place to fuel up, grab a feed, a toilet stop and a catch up on the local history of the area if you have time.We ate a huge juicy burger each for lunch and enjoyed reading all the memorabilia that lined the walls of this historic roadhouse. The Palmer River is steeped in gold mining history and this place is a great stop off to learn about those hard times.Thanx for the feed and the hospitality everyone!! We stopped in again on our way back south too. That's what good service and food delivers................repeat business!!

We stopped on our return journey from Cooktown initially to use the phonebox as had no mobile reception. When we realised the box did not provide incoming calls Andrew the owner immediately offered that we use his phone. After spending 10 mins or so completing a renewal of our campervan we ended up having a great meal and were made to feel very welcome. Its obvious that they love meeting people and I hope that anyone else who stops there has the same great experience as us .

Well, this was our first drive to Cooktown in 46 years. I was 25 years of age then, and maybe this roadhouse was not there in 1970. After two and one half hours driving from Puerto Douglas, we needed a break. Enjoyed a reasonably decent flat white, seated under a shady table outside. So, no food..just the coffee. Think we will pop in on the return trip south. Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch

The road houses that dot Cape York are welcome breaks from the monotony of the drive. Palmer River Road House has claim to the best cake and coffee on the Cape. And along the way, you can see the gold that made Palmer River famous. You can even purchase some jewellery made from local diggings of gold. The museum out the back is defiant the worth a visit.

Plan to stop for lunch in this nice bar, a typical gold rush atmosphere gone bad. Place full of memories and still clean and one of the very few places to stop for a rest (toilet and edible food) while traveling in North Queensland. After that there is only Cooktown, Laura is a very poor Aboriginal town, which I do not recommend visiting.

On one of our frequent trips to Cooktown we decided to call in for a burger, highly recommended by a friend. It was certainly worth the stop and the $s. We had a burger and steak sandwich, they were not just large they were huge and the best part was they tasted wonderful. A great place for a stop even if you don't need one.

Last visit 8 years agoThe grounds (camping) have improved greatly - lovely spot for the night didn't hear the traffic - though we didn't eat there this time couldn't complain on previous visit.Only down fall with the place whilst clean the bathrooms need bulldozing - only thing I'd stay was a negative but was a hot shower Reserviere jetzt einen Tisch

The Road House has got a great little museum, telling the story of the Palmer River gold rush. The food is great, the owners friendly and will give you heaps of information about the area and it's history.Powered sites and spacious dome tents are available if you want to stay over night (recommended).
