A lovely little Tavern this one is located on Payneham Road. I've been here a few times to take advantage of a savvy night out on a weeknight. If you pick your nights here you can grab a great value for money meal. I've been on Tuesday and Wednesday nights where they have schnitzel specials on Tuesdays and steak specials the next night. They also offer you the choice of chips or mash potato with your meals, which seems to be a rarity. Then they have a selective salad bar to nibble at before or during your meal, which was amazing. The menu has evolved several times, with a notable period as a steakhouse. As it stands, they offer a fairly standard pub menu, which can be hit or miss. I've experienced some of the worst nachos there (seriously, how can you mess up nachos?) while also enjoying some excellent schnitzels and steaks within the same two weeks! Go figure! My favorite spot is the sports bar out back, which features a table tennis table, a pool table, comfortable couches, and a couple of plasma screens, making it a great place to catch a game (a bit of a nod to my UK roots).
A quick meal after a busy day! The tavern was surprisingly quiet tonight, with only three tables occupied at 6:30 when I arrived. I tried the lamb salad special for $19.90, and it was absolutely delicious with a generous portion. A generous serving of moist and juicy slow-cooked lamb sat on a bed of rocket, accompanied by thinly sliced cucumber and feta, all drizzled with yogurt and garnished with lime. To top it off, spiced and toasted pita bread was served alongside. I would definitely order this again!
All I can really say about the Payneham Tavern is... become a member! It's free and if you do you not only get monthly member shows, you also get weekly meal specials which include a $7 300g rump steak on Wednesdays. Yes, that's right, $7. Extremely worth it!
