What a change! It's been a while since I had been to peters fishery but was in the area the other day to order takeout for some friends visiting. I don't know if it is new management but a lot of things changed. There are fresh flowers throughout the restaurant and it has a really nice clean air smell. Giving this place one star is generous. My boyfriend and I recently moved to the Matawan area and decided to try Peters Fishery after work. It was a Monday and the billboard outside offers all-you-can-eat crab legs on Mondays and Tuesdays . We were told that it was unavailable but were not given a reason why. I would leave zero stars if I could. My dad I were really craving Lobster Bisque Soup so we thought what better place than a fishery! We went around 7pm I would say, the place was as empty as could be, which surprised me. We placed our order and couldn 't believe the lobster bisque that was served to us. It was BROTH. On my first visit, I ordered the stuffed flounder with classic sides—baked potato and broccoli. The flounder was filled with crabmeat, which I found delicious. However, the crabmeat's flavor overshadowed some of the flounder's taste, making it hard to say whether that was a positive or negative aspect.
The service was quite good. The waitress took the time to go over the extensive menu with me, which offered a wide variety of seafood dishes, as well as options for those who prefer meat (like my wife). She even brought out some appetizer samples to give me a better idea of what their dishes look like.

One of the great things about this restaurant is that they offer both fried and broiled seafood. The broiled option is fantastic for those who are gluten-free, and I thoroughly enjoyed my platter. The fried shrimp is butterflied, which is a nice touch. You get to choose a side, with coleslaw, cocktail sauce, and tartar sauce included. My family thought the food was excellent.

It just wasn't good. Boring menu. Average food at best. I got the Neptune special. I will say the broiled flounder was fresh. All the food was fresh. We both just felt ourselves eating more cole slaw and our baked potato then our meals. For a first Friday in lent I would have expected a wait at a fish restaurant. I guess I now know why there wasn't. I've been to Petes before. I liked it just marginally better the time in the past so I should say I'm not surprised. Worst $50 spent in a while.
I had the experience of eating here for both lunch and dinner. My initial review of 5 stars was for the dinner staff chef/waitress). I went back this week for lunch and was completely taken a back by the difference in both the food and the wait staff. My order was under-cooked and had not much flavor. Overall, it was a great experience. The food was excellent, prices were reasonable, and the service was attentive. The portion sizes were generous as well. The lunch menu is only available on weekdays, so weekend prices are a bit higher. The chowders we tried—Caribbean and New England—were delicious and full of flavor.
This place is a good place to get fresh fish at a reasonable price if you are not at the Jersey shore. They have specials everyday and their lunch menu is basically their dinner menu just half the portion at 2/3 the price. Service has always been excellent and fish always fresh. I recommend them.
