El Maizal has a good selection of traditional Colombian fare, along with daily specials, which are often local soups. The service is attentive and the food is very good. Portions are huge, so go hungry! This is not a fancy restaurant, but it is also not a local dive. It is a clean, local restaurant that is worthy of a try. It is conveniently located just off of the Plaza Bolivar. I tried the sobrebarriga, which had a good char, but was a little dry for my taste. Bistec al caballo was a popular choice at our table, along with arroz con pollo.
If you never had typical Colombian food, this is certainly an option. However, I was really disappointed that they did not have any dishes specifically for the Boyaca region. The other offers from the Andean region of Colombia were nothing special. I tried the Sancocho with chicken. The prices felt high, the same as I pay in Bogota, which is a much more expensive city. A better option for me was Magnus, located on the hill of San Francisco, and has a delicious and affordable lunch (but more international cuisine).
There is such a lack of decent restaurants in Tunja that this is more than welcome. decent typical food and the portions are massive. the atmosphere is somewhat depressing, but not complaining
No question that the food here is great, local and has the perfect LACK of ambience that you want if you are looking for typical and non-tourism food!
