Rothschild 's was always a charming restaurant with a long history of excellent service. Unfortunately that is no longer the case. Having made a reservation a few weeks prior and then being seated in the bar, we asked if we could move outside, upstairs or into the dining room since the bar area was so loud. The owner Frank was acting as the host and assured us things would quiet down. That was around 7 pm. Around 8 pm, the dj started and the room got louder and louder. After a late night stroll on Corona Del Mar I couldn't resist trying Rothschild. I always pass by and today I finally had to come by. I came an hour before closing, barely anybody was there on a Tuesday night. Raul was the most pleasant server I've ever had! He sat me down at my own table and allowed my puppy to sit by me inside. I asked for drink recommendations and I ended up getting the puma. It's a fantastic tequila cocktail with hibiscus and tajin with lime on the rim. He started me off with the famous garlic bread! In all 15-20 years never had a meal less than 5 star R- well tonight was a disappointment . First even this eatery now has TV's sets in the Bar area! Just another place to dumb us down instead of talking to your friends or date or spouse. So now we have the stupid phones and now the endless TV . The Caesar salad was a limp mess and instead of croutons it appeared to be bread crumbs (poor- should have sent it back). The salmon with capers was ok, but a little fishy. The drinks ok , but now $20+tax+tip really !!! Usually never go on a Sunday, maybe that was the problem. The regular bartender was off and B-movie prepared a limp pomegranate martini that lacked any real alcohol. Eventually water...
Ate at Rothschild's last night while on vacation. It was our best dinner here! The food, service and ambiance were excellent! Hubby had pasta bolognese and garlic bread and I had the shrimp scampi with capers. Both meals were so very good. Also enjoyed the crème brûlée. The owner visited our table to make sure we were taken care of. We will definitely be back as our food was so tasty.

Rothschild’s is a special neighborhood restaurant. Intimate, yet open; elegant, yet casual. Everything you could want from a beach city bistro. Tasty food, caring service, nicely crafted drinks. Try their espresso martini.
