Saba's is in the midst of the stretch of Brunswick Street (Fitzroy) with many restaurants, cafes, and bars. It is one of the several Ethiopian restaurants in the neighborhood.Compared to Ethiopian restaurants in the suburban town of Footscray, Saba's is about AU$5-10 pricier. Since very few customers here are Ethiopian expatriates (unlike those in Footscray), the spiciness and flavor levels seem tone down a bit. However, I found some items that I never seen in the 50+ Ethiopian restaurants I have had in my life. Based on the description in the menu, they can be actually from neighboring Sudan or South Sudan. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed having dinner here. I recommend booking, as they were turning people away on Saturday evening when we went. We had a vegetarian combo platter for 2 people, which cost $44 - the prices are reasonable. You eat with your hands, and the dishes of food were tipped on top of Ethiopian bread, which you tear and use to mop up - great fun. There is a good choice of vegetarian and meat dishes, and the whole menu is gluten free! Everything was tasty and we enjoyed the variety of flavours. It all felt very healthy too. The staff were so lovely, we felt really welcome and at home, and enjoyed trying something new. It is obviously very popular and I recommend this place!
I love this place. The staff are very friendly. I went there once and they remembered me four months later. The food's wonderful. The injera is unusual; they use a dark teff, which works really well. There are several excellent lentil dishes, a mixed vegetable dish that's good, and an outstanding beetroot dish. The teff brownies are also really good. It's good, spicy, hearty food, one of my favorite restaurants in Melbourne. Highly recommended. And they play a range of great African music.
Never eaten Ethiopian food before! Not a huge fan of curries etc as don't agree with me (TMI) but this was great! We had Foul ( vegetarian dish) chicken curry and lamb curry! The chicken was on the bone and so tender and yum! Comes with this lovely soft bread that you use as your utensil for eating... great atmosphere and lovely staff... family run and very hospitable. With helpful, friendly staff willing to guide the novice, Saba's is a great pkace to dive into this warm and savoury cuisine. Get ready to share, because dishes tnd to come on injerra, a pancake/bread analog that you break off and use to scoop up the gravy laden yumminess. Delicious.
We've been a few times, and the staff always remember us. We usually get the vegan banquette, and generally leave the exact combination of dishes up to the chef - but we've never been disappointed. Just make sure you book - it's usually pretty busy.
