Returning home from Stanford Shakespeare Festival we wanted to stop for dinner before crossing the Blue Water Bridge back into Michigan. Often we would go into Sarnia, but this time opted to go into Port Edward as we had not done this before. Didn't have a place in mind, just starting driving following the river. Saw Salvatore's as we drove along, decided to give it a try.It's a small, inconspicuous place. When we pulled into the parking lot, noticed the signage that said all homemade, fresh pasta and sauces. And something about platters. Went inside, place was full (capacity is about 35 dinners). One very small table available that would seat 2, but we were a group of 4, would have to wait...
Our hotel recommended this place. We had no idea what we were getting into! When the waitress asked if we had a reservation, which we did not, she made a bad face and pointed to a table. Apparently there is no wine list or food menu. There is a white board listing the wines but it was faded and hard to read. When she came back she asked if we wanted a drink. I asked who made the Cabernet S. She said all wines are Italian. We then noticed a special $25 bottle of Wolf Blass Cab. I ordered the "A ustralian" wine which seemed to upset her more She then brought out a limp lettuce salad with a piece of tomato and some nice bread. No butter so we dipped in olive oil mixture. After collecting my husband from his sailing adventure, we needed to grab a bite to eat before our 3 hour drive home. We were just coming out from the yacht club and noticed this little spot and thought we'd try it. Well I'm so glad we did. What an unexpected delicious experience! No menus, they bring bread-sticks, bruschetta and garlic bread to the table along with a salad. Then tell you what is being served...we opted for half of her suggestions and were completely stuffed by the end. The food was fresh and well prepared. It was topped off by a fresh serving of tiramisu, which again we split! Overall, very friendly staff,excellent food, a wonderful experience!
We went back after about 7 years. Just don't make it to the area very often but made a special trip to return. Make sure you have reservations as the establishment is limited on seating.There is no menu. Just a few questions on your preferences and restrictions. The staff is very friendly and makes sure you are taken care of. We received what we remembered from our last trip. A great meal and super service.As usual, we could not finish everything that we were served and took home some great leftovers. Hope to back again soon and will not wait as long for our next trip. A stress free dining experience. No need to consult a menu because you are all served what Mama Salvatore has on her mind that evening. Portions are HUGE and this is a great place for great food.
We had a dinner party of 30 people there, and it was excellent. Great variety of food and service was perfect. Home-style Italian cooking with a great house wine. Staff was the best ever.
Stopped for a late lunch. Excellent food, great service. Family style Italian at its best! Highly recommend to anyone looking for great food at a good price.
