Some places are gourmet and hip. This place is not. But don't let that dissuade you from coming. In fact, on a recent Saturday night, the parking lot was nearly full when we arrived at 7:15. (Dinner before 7 is prime dinner hour here . The place is not full of twenty-something's. It's a rather older crowd. My wife and I were here for lunch today. This is the first time we've been here for lunch. We were seated right away without reservations. We requested a table and were given our choice. Our server, Victor, came over promptly and was very attentive throughout the meal without being bothersome. He rattled off what seemed like a dozen specials from memory. They all sounded very good but were too large sounding, we were only there for lunch. We started out with cups of soup. My wife had the clam chowder and I had the fish chowder. I started with the chowder, and we also shared a serving of escargot. I'm not a fan of escargot, so I skipped that dish. The chowder, however, was excellent—creamy, rich, and truly delicious, perfect for a chilly February evening. At Saybrook Fish House, they provide complimentary rolls with butter, along with a large salad, which was a delightful surprise. The salad was fresh and tasty, so keep that in mind when choosing your meal. I ordered the crab cake sandwich, while others in my group opted for the scallops and cod. There’s a variety of seating options, making it easy to find the perfect spot. The lighting is just right—you can see your meal without feeling like you’re under a spotlight! This is not my first time here, but it will probably my last. Tonight my husband ordered an admiral's platter and I ordered the signature dish baked stuffed shrimp. I was very disappointed with the shrimp. First I was surprised that the shrimp actually still has its shells on and I had to use my fingers to peel it off. Stuffed shrimp is usually a fork and knife meal. Then when I peeled the shrimp, I noticed that the vein was not cleaned out. Not what I am used to. The manager apologized and said that is how they do it.
I recently had one of the best lunches of all time. Joe, the owner, greeted and seated us. Our server was equally friendly and attentive. Fried fresh oysters, perfectly cooked vegetable medley, fresh salad with awesome house dressing, topped off by delicious lemon cake. This is the only restaurant (outside of New Orleans) where I order oysters. The meal is served at a pace worthy of a delicious meal. I appreciate everything about the welcoming ambiance and calm. The experience could not have been better!
Great dining option in the area! It's undoubtedly the best around, and that's saying something. The service is excellent; it largely depends on the server, but they do train their staff well, so everyone tends to provide a consistent, high-quality experience with flair. I highly recommend Saybrook Fish House—it's an excellent choice for seafood, and the service is exceptional too!
