The server informed us that most of the menu items were unavailable, which was disappointing but manageable. My partner and I decided to share the fish and chips. When our order arrived, we were shocked to find we were not provided with napkins, condiments, or even utensils. When I asked for condiments, the server responded sarcastically, "Why?" They eventually brought out an empty ketchup bottle, and when I requested a different one, they sighed and asked why again. This frustrating exchange repeated when we asked for napkins. While I understand the staff member was alone and doing her best, I genuinely believe I could make a far superior version myself. I suspect that some of the other menu items might have been better choices if they had been available. The restaurant is a cozy spot located in the basement of the Reed Opera House. Besides the Coddle and Pies, everything is prepared fresh upon ordering. The Coddle simmers throughout the day, while the Pies are assembled earlier. I can't recommend this place enough; the food is fantastic, and your waitress will likely be the owner—a delightful lady who is very friendly and enjoys chatting with customers. If you can, I suggest stopping by in the early evening!
I ordered the Guinness fish and chips and the whiskey peach cobbler. The fish was so over fried that they were almost black. They were supper greasy and I couldn't taste any Guinness. The fries were cold and soggy. The peach cobbler was made with canned cling peaches. The cobbler was cold and gummy. There was no flavor of any kind. The entire meal went into the garbage. Absolutely fantastic! I was in Salem for business and decided to place a takeout order. I couldn't choose between the Irish shepherd's pie and the bangers and mash, so I opted for a little bit of both. It was five stars all around! The food was delicious!!! The food was fantastic and the service was excellent! The dessert was absolutely divine! Since this is the only place in Oregon that offers the amazing Kilkenny Red, I will definitely be returning! It has quickly become our new favorite spot, just an hour from home. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the music is the lively Irish toe-tapping variety that I adore. What’s not to love?
As a recent customer, I have completely fallen in love with this restaurant. It's rare to find family-owned places these days, and I truly hope they remain around for a long time!
