Spirit of India - Tisch resevieren

We were saddened to learn the Spirit of India had changed hands. We used to enjoy the great food and exceptional service. Nonetheless that is business so with family and friends we decided we would give the new owners a chance.The good things...the food was still great quality as was the price.The worst....the poor service. We sat with dirty dishes for too long and we could not attract the one waitress on hand to clear up for us. When we did get her attention and asked if we could have a coffee as had been paid for in the banquet menu, she quietly snarled they didn't have coffee and then conceded we could have instant if we wanted. She never offered the desert menu either. She was truly rude...

We've been here many times but first formal review on here, this place is located on Clarendon st about 5 mins walk from the main shopping strip/near Coles and theres a handful of restaurants and bars close by. We've tried many, many Indian food over the years but nothing as tasty as this place. The butter chicken, lamb korma, chicken tikka and garlic chicken are just some of our favourites. Yes the service can be shocking and we've experienced some doozies. Then there's other times when the service is reasonable. If you have patience and want some of the best Indian food going around. Every time I visit a place like that I hope for something special, a spark of genius, a touch of god and just about every time I'm disappointed. This was one of those places. Decent enough but without anything special or extraordinary about it. Located in a drab building, with boring, drab exterior and interior, dimly lit. The staff is pleasant and nice, smiles look genuine and the service is just as it should be. The house wines are barely drinkable (just what you would expect) but the food is, well, decent (that's that word again). We have been patronising Spirit of India for the 13 years we have lived in Southbank. During that time, the food has been consistent, of good quality and tasty. Likewise, the staff are always friendly and efficient. It also provides amazingly good value. My partner and I share an entrée of spinach pakoras, a dahl and one other main course, bread and rice and there is always enough left over for a "doggy bag" which gives us another meal. The restaurant also takes American Express without a surcharge and allows BYO without a corkage charge, something that rarely happens these days. This restaurant has been around for quite some time. Never seems to have many dinners but somehow survives. So last night we gave it a try. Restaurant to ourselves we enjoyed good food AND wine for a reasonable price and left totally stuffed and satisfied.I'm no expert on Indian food but this was very tasty with each dish having distinctive flavours satisfied our taste buds.Will be back with the kids.

I've been going to the Spirit of India for nearly 8 years!We used to live around the corner... so it was our local and they do takeaways as well.It's good food.The service is always decent.It can tend to get very loud though! If the restaurant gets busy.And it's actually really quite affordable.

Service is VERY SLOW. If you place an order for take away, be prepared to wait for atleast an hour. They dont answer phones, staff in this restaurant are not friendly, they dont pay attention while taking the order. Food was very oily.I wont be going back to this restaurant again.

it's good value, had to wait a bit but worth it for good Indian food and plenty of it. worth a visit for sure.

The food is Ok, however the service is not very good at all. Be prepared for a long wait for OK food.
