I went to this restaurant last night. The food was left under a hotplate for too long, the coleslaw was warm, and the chips were cold. My partner ordered steak, which was overcooked and dry with cold chips again. Our waitress was lovely, so we left her a tip. There seemed to be a shortage of staff, and when I asked to speak to the manager, he seemed to be avoiding us. I had to confront him before he came over to our table. He was charming and admitted that he wouldn't have paid for the food we were served. He offered a brief apology and only charged us for the drinks. We won't be returning any time soon, which is a shame.
My husband and I have dined at this restaurant several times before, but our experiences were not always enjoyable. We recently visited on a Wednesday evening during hot weather and despite being understaffed with only 3 employees in the restaurant and bar, we were pleasantly surprised by the exceptionally good meals we were served. Special thanks to Joe in the bar and the chef, also named Joe, who prepared the best meal we have ever had at The Starting Gate. We suggest that Beefeater hire more staff to make this eatery truly exceptional.
As a guest of the neighbouring premier inn we went for a lunch snack. Tables were left un cleaned and with empty glasses for a while. We ordered 3 snacks for £13 very poor food. Barely warm, tasteless and basic, garlic bread was so dry I used a large portion of bbq sauce to be able to eat it. The hot sauce which we chose didn’t come and we were told by the waitress they didn’t have any ! Offered a free drink instead which we declined. Breakfast was better as we sat in restaurant so miss the main menu and go for breakfast is our advice
Food was good when we eventually got it. Service was slap dash, we waited for 5 minutes to be seated, we did take a while to decide what we wanted but it then took 35+ minutes to receive our food. This would be acceptable at a busy time but there were only 5 other tables with people and 3 of them were either eating or finishing.

The place was busy, so it took twenty minutes before I could order, which I wasn't worried about, and eventually I ordered a mixed grill. The plate was cold, the food was luke warm, the 8oz rump rare steak was medium and the English mustard I asked the waiter for never turned up. I won't be going back.....
Four of us went for dinner celebrating a Birthday, the staff were very welcoming on arrival, we had two sirloin one T bone and mixed grill, All meals were cooked to perfection and Joe who served us couldn’t have been more helpful. The last few visits to the beefeater have been excellent
