After we went there in the past with the tram of Heidelberg and thrugged the stairs on the vineyards, then until a nice walk to the place with a view of the Granit-Ex-Quarry, then again for well-earned beer, we knew of this place and beat it for a group of 8 for a nice relaxing night. Great choice. The table we got was on the back under the trees (it was 32 degrees C and we still had a fantastic view of the area west of Heidelberg, to Mannheim and beyond. At a nice weather day, or at noon with the sun overhead and the umbrellas above, we would have chosen one of the tables next to a 30 meter drop, and even better views. A place I loved in my childhood, my youth and now as a tourist destination when I visit from afar. The Ritter von Strahl was the first occupant of this mystical fortress. He guarded and defended the town, actually Wine City a title it received in the 14th century. For this protection, the farmers and vintners gave one tenth of their harvest to the Ritter. The wine was stored in the Zehntkeller (tenth-cellar) which today serves as a community hall. Over the centuries the Burg was destroyed several times. The last kick at the cat was delivered by Napoleon who, standing in the vineyards beside the castle, is to have said: Why would God waste such beauty on the Germans. I guess he underestimated...
Wunderschöne Aussicht über das Rheintal. Gute traditionelle deutsche Küche. Das Wiener Schnitzel war knusprig mit guten Pommes. Das Wild war köstlich. Unsere Kinder haben die Spätzle mit Pilzsoße geliebt und alles aufgegessen. Obwohl wir vier aktive Kinder dabei hatten, wurden wir nett behandelt. Geht im Sommer dorthin und esst auf der Außenterrasse.
Wir haben unsere ganze Familie hierher gebracht, 11 Personen, und wurden sofort platziert. Der Service war ausgezeichnet, aufmerksam, wenn man ihn braucht, und lässt einen in Ruhe, wenn nicht. Dadurch konnten wir eine tolle Zeit verbringen und das großartige Essen genießen. Man muss einfach aufhören zu essen.
